Feather weight
 

I am thinking of getting a feather weight for myself. I am wondering what is the going rate for a feather weight in good condition and in working order? I had someone tell me that between $250-$300 is the top amount I should pay. What are your thoughts?

I am looking for one too. I am thinking I don't want to pay anymore than $250. Just that is the most I want to pay.
Someday somewhere I will find one for that price or less.i think anything more than that is just inflated by the demands. Good luck on your search for one.

I have two Featherweights with cases that I am going to sell. I live right outside St.Louis. If anyone is really interested, please PM me. I might not be able to send you pictures right away as the two grandsons are here until Monday and I have appointments on Tuesday but I am selling them. These are black sewing machines with accessories and manuals.

I just purchased one for $125 but then it was a 30% off everything day. everything there but stinky moldy case. I almost have that conquered. no stink. few more days in the sun will cure the mold.
I would think anything from $150 to $200 would be within reason. but it all depends on your area and what people will pay. just be patient and one will come you way.

$250.00 is a reasonble price if in good working condition. I got mine on E-Bay for $200.00 plus $35.00 shipping. It had been thoroughly checked out and cleaned.

on of the local shops here has a beautiful one for $450....the prices really range across the country & of course dependent on condition- best thing to do is to determine what YOU feel is a reasonable amount- the most you would be willing to spend- then start looking, watching, checking them out- at some point you will find the perfect one for you in the price range you are comfortable with. I spent 3 years looking for a vintage machine- looked at lots of reasonably priced ones- some my hubby would say...'you know, you can have it if you want it' ...and I would just say- no- that's not the one...then one day I walked into a barn sale, saw a case- opened it...and there it was! when I asked how much the lady said...'would you give me $20 for it?'....oh how I love that machine! the right one will come along in it's own time

One just sold on ebay for $110. When folks list them on CL for $300-$600 they do not sell. I sold a beautiful, serviced one for $250 about 1 1/2 years ago. I priced it at that because I wanted to sell it, not sit on it for months.

I bought mine at an antique store for 250.00 with a case and manual extra bobbins. Just brought it home and cleaned some dust off and it runs like a charm.

I would like to have one to use , not really worried about how it looks , just that it functions in a top notch manner . I don't have a designated sewing room and one of these would be the berries to use on the kitchen table :)

I'm looking for a FW also but I'm a tightwad and don't want to pay that much. The ones I've seen at that price here are a real mess. I'm still going to keep on looking but will try to find one to take on the go. May have to go to Wallyworld or go over to the next town to see what they have at the K-Mart that is still there, I think! Will see.

What shape and prices are your featherweights.

I purchased a 1951 FW with card table for $300. Love it.

I just bought one on Ebay. I found that there are those who sell featherweights as a business. They start at $350.00 At that price you can expect the machine to run, and work well from the beginning. I would also expect the black case, and some attachments. Those you buy on Ebay, GoodWill, etc. more than likely are not promised to run. With a good cleaning and possibly some parts they should run well. The lady who had a smelly black case, well, she isn't alone. There is a felt pad that is under the sewing machine. 50 years of oil, etc. gets collected down there. It seems often to spill or smell up the machine. Then there are water issues that could have caused the mold. For the most part you can clean out the inside and put it open in the sunshine until it doesn't smell bad any more. Nova Montgomery has classes for featherweight maintenance that is excellent. She also sells parts for the machines, along with instructions on how to clean and maintain.
The one I bought off ebay sold for $149.00. However, the man who sold it liked to monkey around with things like sewing machines. It was pretty clean, but I don't think he knew what he was doing. My sewing machine wouldn't run. My machine had aluminum wiring, it was made in Scotland. You can find out where it was made and when by the number. Aluminum wiring is not good wiring. I had to replace my wiring for the foot control. I needed a new belt. New feet, bobbins, light bulb, and so on. That was an additional $65.00(plus postage to and from and then another one). I finally resolved the problem with what was wrong with my machine, but I was on the fence as to having to take it to a sewing machine repair guy for quite a while. So if you buy one that is not guaranteed, as being clean and running, you need to know something about how to get it there! Either you pay a pro to fix it for you, or you do it yourself.

I would be interested in one of your machines. Are they in working order.? What do they cost?? I would appreciate any information you have on these machines. Thanks barb

I bid on the ones that I buy and have never paid more than $115.00 ( I have 5 ) Go to Shopgoodwill.com and do some bidding. Some of them are " pick-up only " and others can be shipped. Some need minor cleaning and others need a bit more TLC but, well worth the process to get them. My most recent was a centennial that I paid $95.00 for.
