Featherweight-CL Score Pics
2 Attachment(s)
Hey Everyone~I figured out how to resize my pics so here are a few before and after. I said she was in great shape, but really she's just in good shape...no matter I am happy. She makes perfect stitches. My only issue is that without the bobbin in, she runs so quiet I couldn't believe it. Once I put the bobbin in, she's noisy. Could be the "old" thread in the bobbin?? I will take out the thread and wind up some fresh thread and see if that works. Only 1 bobbin came with her. Have already ordered new bobbins, cord for foot pedal and needles. Next will be the belt and a hunt for feet. Her name is Annie. Thanks for looking.

No pics have come up for me. You did far better than I did. Found one for $125 last week- It Smells! 3 hour round trip. The cord was covered in many bits of electrician and duct tape. The so-called electrician I bought it from said it was his mother's, the wiring was "safe enough", and he couldn't figure out how to put a new cord on. Yikes. I made a stop on the way home to a quilt shop that services machines, but he was using the last of his cords for machines being serviced. I ordered a new belt and cord to be mailed, but wasn't smart enough to order a new pad. Machine is in good shape aside from cord and broken off light bulb.
I am thinking of putting on a low shank adapter so I can use feet I already have. Do you know if this will work? |
Annie is beautiful, congrats.
|
Congrats on your beautiful machine.
|
Monroe, I don't think you will need an adapter. Featherweights are short shank machines and many other machines are too. Try the feet you have. Likely as not, they will fit and work just fine. Likewise, the feet and attachments for a featherweight will probably fit other machines. I use my buttonholer that came with my Featherweight on my Janome 6500 machine and it works beautifully (the built in buttonholer on my Janome won't handle large or thick buttons).

Thanks very much Shelbie. I should have been clearer- I have some snap on feet and was talking about a snap on shank adapter. Will give it a try when I get the new power cord. Patti- what inspired the name Annie?
|
Mighty and Rumbols, thank you I am in love. Monroe~congrats on your new FW. Sounds like the electrician was just a "taper" trying to disguise himself as an electrician, lol. You got a good buy though, enjoy her/him. Well, I recently bought a treadle, Singer 127 Sphinx in a 3 drawer cabinet from GW and got her pretty much cleaned up and on display. I named her Miss Bertha after my DGM, whom I adored; she had a 3 drawer treadle. So when I got my FW, I decided to name her based on my middle name Ann (my maiden name is Hall, so I always felt like Annie Hall and never liked the name Patricia) thus Annie. Gonna try to post some more pics.

One place to check for a noisy Featherweight is the bobbin case. Here is a link to a site with instructions on how to do that: http://thefeatherweight221factory.co...kingSound.aspx There is nothing out of the ordinary about the feet, belts, or most accessories for the Featherweights. A lot of people try to rip others off by charging more for anything that has anything to do with them. So when you go to buy feet and accessories just look for low shank feet and don't mention Featherweights. Joe |
You found a really nice machine hope you have fun sewing with Annie.
They are a great little machine. |
Lovely machine. I just bought one off of eBay Canada & she arrived the other day. She smells a bit but hopefully that will fade in some better environments. Mine is in pretty good shape. The decals on the front of the base are a bit faded but that's all. Love her - my Miss Abby.

Callen~congrats on Miss Abby, she sounds like Annie's twin! Mine smelled too and after I took her apart to clean I found out why. The drip pad was saturated with old oil and lube. Ugh, it was disgusting and I had to scrape the solidified stuff off the pan. Cleaned it, waxed it and put a piece of felt in it and she's good. The case I set outside in the fresh air and sprayed with Febreeze.
Joe! Thank you so much for that link! I am going to check it out today. And thanks for the tip on the feet! You just saved me a lot of money. |
Caroline, Patti,
Glad to be of help. Joe |
Joe, thank you so much for the tip. She is now sewing like a charm and quiet as can be, Best of all, I fixed it myself.

Thanks Joe. I am using my featherweight to sew on while my Elna is out for service. I noticed that the Featherweight is rather "clackety". I will print out the instructions and see if this fixes the noise problem.

congrats and welcome to the FW club!

jljack-I oiled her so much that 2 days later I found oil dripping off the needle! leaha~thanks, I am super excited to do a quilt on her! Have 2 UFO's in mind.

Clothilde sells bobbin washers made of teflon. They help reduce the friction of the bobbin and may quiet it some. They are supposed to eliminate "backlash" and help do away with nests on the back while quilding. I love mine in the Janome Horizon, although it doesn't need one. I put one in each of my machines beneath every bobbin. What the heck, I had them and it may help. Some vintage machine will tolerate plastic bobbins. Haven't seen them for FWS, but somebody will eventually think of it.

A set of Singer attachments will run about $30, if you are lucky. Most of the stuff you won't need. Modern, useful, feet can be obtained off Ebay. Watch out for bobbins. They don't all fit, even though they say they will. Use a dependable site with full Singer services. It may cost a little more, but you will be apt to be totally satisfied than to use low bidder.

I agree, some try to take carnal knowlege of you when you use the name Featherweight. Low shank attachments will work and are readily available on Ebay. Just watch daily and you will eventually get lucky. Stay away from the really old ones. Try to stay 1935 or later and the low shank should fit. A lot of them say they will fit 221,222,99, 201 etc.
Type 66 bobbins won't fit however. If anyone knows if another class will work on a FW, please let us know. Is there a plastic bobbin that can be used on a 221? We have used the teflon, bobbin, washers with good results though. |
Just last weekend I took my FW to the shop to be serviced, oiled, new belt and presser foot adjustment. Runs like brand new. Quiet as a mouse! Signed up to take my first quilting class in a couple weeks. Can't wait to make my first quilt!
