FM quilting on 201-2???

Sooo excited! Just discovered the feed dogs drop on my gorgeous "new" 201 so am ready to try quilting on it. My joy cannot be contained! What foot do you all prefer? I have a large collection of old feet but no darning foot. Figures. Really don't want to take money from my savings for a 301 to buy a big foot or some other spendy foot unless it comes highly recommended. What do you think? Also, what grease do you all use on your motors? Thanks!

Vaseline is the most recommended grease for a potted motor. It has a melting temperature similar to the old Singer Grease.

Congrats on the machine!

Yes, vaseline for the motor, and maybe triflow or some other light grease with telfon for the machine gears. There are people who have set up their 201 for free motion quilting, and do nothing else on this model, even embroidery. Like any machine, I guess it has mostly do to with getting tension right, and a good thread and needle match for the job is always a must.

I don't know if a 301 has that many advatanges over something like a 15 or 201, but it's aluminium and it's easier to carry around. I shall not prevent you from getting one though.

Thanks for the info. Mickey2, your comment about the 301 cracked me up! I do love vintage Singers so I am greatly relieved to know that you will not prevent me from getting a 301. May you be richly rewarded with bobbins that never empty, needles that never break and more fabric than you need.

For FMQing on my Singer 201-2 I just use my cheap plastic FMQ foot that actually came with my Wal-Mart Brother machine. They are both low shank, so no worries. It fits. :)
