Found a bronze embossed White rotary!

I stopped at a yard sale on the way home from work yesterday and found a much neglected, but very restorable bronze White rotary. It has some light surface rust and is missing a few parts. But for $5 I'm not complaining!

Even nicer than the brown one ;- ) The cylinder shaped motor looks very nice too, I hope it can be serviced and work as it should. I've never seen anything like it, except maybe those cast iron treadle stands. Where there any case or speed controller with it?

Mariposa 05-21-2016 06:12 AM

Congrats on the fun find!

Mrs. SewNSew 05-21-2016 06:58 AM

Beautiful! Congratulations!

No controller or anything else with it. The motor looks ok, but haven't tested it yet. Here is the backside. The motor is the same color too.

She's very pretty! Good find!

Mickey2 05-21-2016 10:28 AM

Any idea of how old it is? I've never seen those cast iron decorations in the body, I imagine it is a sort of extra decorated version of a known model? I hope you get around to restoring it and let us know how it runs. There's not as much info on these White Rotary models as other brands.

Very pretty!

I haven't found. Anything definitive, but I think it was made around 1929-1930ish. It's next in line after the Singer VS2 I'm working on now.

Mickey2 05-21-2016 01:12 PM

That's about the same time as Singer 201 was introduced, which I think was their first rotary bobbin model (except for industrial possibly, but I don't know of any). The white rotary is much older though. The White tension mechanism is rather fancy, as well as a very neat motor setup. Any trace of a light ever being fitted on it?

Most older machines are sort of hinged together, some have meshing gears. How does the inners look?

No sign of a light, not sure how it would have been attached on this model. I haven't tested the motor yet, but it turns over easily and there is no sign of rust inside. Here is a view of the bottom. There is a little light rust, but nothing serious. Everything moves freely.

The Singer 115 is a full rotary machine, and it was out much ealier than the 201. the 101 is also full rotary.

I have a manual for White showing an embossed machine - it is posted on VSS

This is the regular version with the light.

BTW - if you are interested in a set of attachments -I know somebody that has lots of extras .

I'd like to have some attachments, but first I need to find the missing parts, get it cleaned up and working. How does that cool looking light attach? Is the light bracket unique to the embossed model? Thanks!

I've been reading all I can find on these rare machines. I need to find the missing bobbin case, bobbins and bobbin cover plate (please look at this photo - is anything else missing?).

I did not realize there were so many different models of White rotarys, so I'm not sure what model I need to look to for the missing parts. One post I found on Needlebar of a similar machine missing the same cover plate stated "The missing slide plate is a smaller size than White Rotary models 41 and 43 or 75 and 77 plates. Throat plate size of models 75 and 77 & Domestic 153 are likewise larger than the regular White Rotary throat plate.". So can anyone tell me which WR model I should look for to get the correct missing parts for this old girl?

Thanks.

She's a beauty. If you clean it up, can't wait to see it.

Sew Freak 05-22-2016 04:58 AM

wow...nice find....luv the scroll work on the body!!! never seen one like that before!

Wanabee Quiltin 05-22-2016 07:11 AM

This is a beautiful machine, love the color and the embossing.

Macybaby 05-22-2016 08:08 AM

here is a picture of mine.

The light can be put to the front or back, I've got a decalled version with the same light put on to the back.

I checked with several other White rotaries I have, and they all look the same. I even checked and the front plates were all the same.

So I went out to the shed where I have two parts ones - and found a slide and even still had a bobbin case in one . . .

I've got almost as much extra White stuff as I do all the others combined.

MaacyBaby, you are a true treasure to our community! Thanks for the info!

Thanks Macybaby, I sent you a PM.

Tippysmom 05-23-2016 08:40 AM

Looks much better than the one I saw on CL here. Poor thing, I feel sorry for it.

My bronze White rotary is about finished. I didn't try to make the bronze plating super shiny, just cleaned and gently polished it. I obtained the missing parts, cleaned and lubed all the internals and it now runs very smoothly. It will sit in a place of honor in my collection.

PatriciaPf 06-06-2016 05:50 PM

Such a lovely design on the WR! Bronze doesn't rust, so is the term applied just to the color?

ndnchf 06-07-2016 01:02 AM

No, not just the color. The iron castings were bronze plated. With age they gain this lovely patina.

Jane Quilter 06-07-2016 02:17 AM

Well, you sure saved this old girl from a terrible demise to a place of honor. You should be proud.
