Funny about the Rocketeer I just bought

I posted a couple weeks ago about a 500A I found at the thrift store for $15 in the cabinet. I didn't even know it was a "Rocketeer," I just wanted the cabinet for my 401A. There was a box of design cams in one of the drawers. I assumed the cams were for the 500. After much taking apart, cleaning, lubing, oiling, futzing with the tension, etc..I finally get around to trying to change the cam. Imagine my surprise when I see that the cams in the box are way different! From what I can tell the cams go to a Kenmore. Now why would I think that the cams in the cabinet drawer would go for the machine in the cabinet?
I know I can use the cams from my 401. The sad thing is that there is a Kenmore somewhere running around without its cams!

Can you post a picture of the cams?

sew4nin,

shopgoodwill.com seems to have the Singer top hat cams all the time. Any black Singer top hat cam will work in the 500A.

Also interested in a pic of the Kenmore cams.

I actually pictured the cams when I posted the original thread about my $15 thrift store find. I thought at the time that they went with the machine.
I really showed my inexperience. I am trying to include a link to my original post, but am not sure it will work.

I can take a pic and post if you can't see this. I also know that the cams don't show up very well in the picture. I will check back tomorrow after I get home from work, if you still want a pic, I will take a better one and post.

I remember looking at those thinking "what a weird case, I've never seen that with Singer cams" :)

I have all but about 3 of the Singer black cams, and of course you know that means all of the usual sources have dried up.

Joe, you don't need a set of 158.19142 style cams do you?

J Miller 06-25-2013 05:44 AM

sew4nin,

I can't tell, what cams those are by that pic. All I can see is they are top hat type cams, but there are several versions of those.

Tammi,

Are those the Kenmore top hat, large flat or otherwise? I've got three Kenmore 158-xxxxx series machines that take three different cams.
I don't know what style cams a 158.19142 would take.

I have all the Singer top hat cams ... I think. Perhaps two sets of them. Which is good because although the 401 and 500s don't need all the cams our T&S 778 does.

That's right, I think I knew that from the last time we talked about Kenmore cams.
These are the ones that the 158-19142 uses. I love the "books" they come in. The buttonholer and other accessories all came in books you could stack on a shelf. I actually bought them for the book, but it's not as handy to carry to a S&B as I thought.

sew4nin, do yours look like this, or different?

Tammi,

I have two sets of those cams. One blue/green set and one green and orange set. I don't need another set, but I am looking for certain numbers. They made them up to #56 at least.

Here is what I did to my Rocketeer - upgraded colors to match movie poster for "Rocketeer" - wish I had another at $15 to work on.
