German Transverse Handcrank w/Mother of Pearl

Not sure of the make yet.

I picked this up Saturday for $90.

It was missing the presser foot tension screw (I had a spare). It had a flat shank needle in it which was set up for left to right threading, and at the wrong height. The take-up is a homemade replacement (but works). and it was generally filthy. I SO wish this machine did not have the paint loss it does. It would have been amazing in it's day....

However after opening up the back and viewing the underside i can say that this is THE cleanest least worn machine I have pre-1900. The main gears are almost spotless.

It kinda looks like it might have said "suprema" once

Sorry for the dark shot but the flash just washes out the colors,

this is the only view that shows what it once looked like

"numbers matching" hehe Note the cool thread cutter.

Just amazing....

Needle chart and importers badge.
(NOTE: the "made in Baden". the fact that the name of the German town is used usually indicates that it is Pre WWI)

Even came with a boat shuttle and bobbin (correct ones!)

Other than the paint missing that machine looks fantastic. I have faith that you will be able to bring her back to her former glory. It may take a day or 2, well maybe 3 :D but you will do it.

Steve,
I believe that that cute bell/ tulip shaped inlay was only used by Gritzner.

SteveH 05-27-2014 09:22 AM

NICE!!! I was looking at Wertheim or Winselman but Gritzner is spot on! It matches every detail, including the orientation of the handcrank. Thanks!

BTW - When I let go after one quick turn of the handcrank, it gives 7 full rotations before stopping. so smooth...

What a treasure! Can't wait to see her after you have worked your magic with her.
