A gift of a hand crank machine

I just received this as a gift. I'm really into mid-century machines, so I'm totally lost on this one. The handle will turn, but I forgot to watch the needle when they turned it. I'm afraid to mess with it until I get some oil on it. The finish is crackling away as we speak. It has a beautiful wooden cover/container with inlaid patterns. Of course someone didn't have a key and tore the lock out of it. I understand it's English.

Can anyone tell me anything about it?

This is a German machine not English. Very good machine.

I'm not sure of it's origin, but I did a web search and found this. There are a few very similar machines under different names, Gritzner, Wertheim, and yet two others. Harris No. 2 is almost identical. There's this page worth reading.

Oh how wonderful of someone to give it to you. I keep looking at the hand cranks and still haven't been able to buy one.

I recently picked up a Faudel London that is very much like this. Most info, threading, shuttle, etc can be found under Frister and Rossman and on youtube. It takes a special needle & I had to order from Ebay. Mine has the peacock decal & works very nice. I figure it to be made abt 1903. One of the Mother of Pearl inlays is missing and has been filled in with some sort of putty. I had never seen a transverse shuttle before, I will try to load a pic

Watson & bkay,

Both are gorgeous machines. I'm hoping I can talk my aunt into letting me buy her hand crank Avona machine this summer. We shall see.
