Gifted Model #15

I have never owned a vintage sewing machine and was recently gifted a Singer Model #15. I knew exactly where to come to get help identifying the machine, finding out how old this machine really is, and how to clean the decorative plates as well as the machine.

The number on the plate on the topside of the machine (right hand bottom corner) is AE-658018. Underneath the machine I see 'SIMANCO USA 125255'.

It is an electric machine in the orginal cabinet with a sewing stool. The owner's supply of sewing accessories and the manuel to the machine were inside the stool. The decals are in excellent condition except for an inch or so where the owner feed material into the machine. Such a treasure from a dear friend.

Thanks so much for your input.

Lucky you! I love my 15.

AE658018- Sept 1 1937- yours is one of the 40,000 model 15 serial numbers allotted on that date. There are good cleaning tutorials elsewhere on this site- sorry but I never learned how to add links. I'm sure someone will pop on shortly to help! Don't uses any by Lost51- sometimes they destroy the fragile decals. Have fun!

Here is a link to Muv and Fav's wonderful videos. Take your time doing it. The gunk and black stuff will come off if you are patient.

Can we see pics of your 15? It is sort of like petting your sewing machine vicariously.;)

Thank you, fellow board members. You have helped to identify when Ms. Mildred was 'born' and how many were made. The link about about cleaning and giving Ms. Mildred her shine back is great! I have never posted a picture but this is the time to learn. She hasn't been shined up yet but hope you can tell what a jewel she is. Picture to be posted soon. Thanks again.

Linda,

My grandmother was named Mildred. I'm waiting for the pics, just because.

Is she a 15-90 or a 15-91? The 90 will have a belt, the 91 will not as it is a potted motor with internal gears.

Donna, Ms. Mildred does not have an external belt so can I safely presume she is gear driven? Did they have belts when they were hand or foot driven? I am learning that I know nothing about vintage machines. Thanks for your question.

Joe, please be patient with me. Will need DH's help to teach me how to send a pic. If you want to, please send a PM and let me know your grandmother's last name. Wouldn't it be ironic?!

In good light I can see that Ms. Mildred has not been cleaned in a very long time. Tomorrow I will sit down with her, after watching the tutorials, and start the cleaning.

Continuing adventure with Ms. Mildred:

Did a little cleaning today and more needed. She sews a beautiful stitch and is very quiet. Thanks to Mr. Miller and my DH, you should be able to see a picture of her.
