I saw this old Singer posted on Craigslist and decided to check it out tomorrow. The seller says it's still available and the machine still works. $50....you think it's a good price???

It looks good.

Not for $50. These sell for much less, in this condition, in CA.

the base of it looks a little rough....I agree that $50 is too high...I'd offer $30

Thank you for your honest opinions. I think I will let this one go and try asking my nephew if he's ready to part with my sister's treadle instead. That would have more history to it.

good decision...not worth the 50

Just seen this thread. So pleased you didn't buy it.

How can the seller say it works and have it in a condition where you can't test it? It's not even set in a base.

I wouldn't give two quid for it unless I was going to massacre it for parts.

Old machines are like buses. Another one always comes along, but you just don't know how long you'll have to wait.

Thank you all for your wise words to sway me from making this poor investment. Hubby said he saw a yard sale the other day and wished he'd known I was "looking" for a oldie. LOL Guess they do come up periodically in Hawaii. We are so isolated sometimes.

I've come to learn that the price is relative to how accessable they are in your area. I see some that people bought and I wouldn't have spent a penny for them. They are easy to come by here. I wasnt into them when I lived in Pearl City so I don't know how they are there. Do you come by them very often. Does it work and does it have the power cord? If he says it runs take some scrap material with you and test it. Then decide if you think its a good deal.

Yes, Miriam, I saw that posting and decided that while it seemed like a good machine, it wasn't as old a one that I was hoping for. It reminded me of my mother's sewing machine and I was looking for something a bit older. Guess if I'm really serious about getting a "old" machine, I should do a bit more searching at Garage Sales or such. And there's always my sister's machine still to consider. How she came to own it will be a mystery (as she passed away this past March).
