Harp area measurements
 

I'm trying to decided which Singer machine to purchase. I have a question regarding the differences in the harp area measurements for the 301, 401 and 15-91. I'm looking to start bidding on Ebay to make my final purchase so I'm unable to take those measurements myself. It seems these machines go for a reasonable price.

I'd go for the 15-91

301 = 7.5x 5.25
15-91 = 7 x 5
401 = 7.25 x 5

I haven't tried my 301 for FMQ yet but hear good things about them, the 15-91 is great for FMQ, and the 401 has the horizontal bobbin, and other than being a good general stitcher with some decorative cam stitching, have not tried it for FMQ either.
The 301 is the most portable, and lightest weight.

The 'Throat' space on these is definitely an aspect to consider. But why do you need a big throat space? For FMQing? If so, the 401 would be the lowest of low on my FMQing list. I love my 401 for piecing and straight line quilting, but they are notoriously not good for FMQing. My 401 does not perform well with FMQing, partly due to the raised feed dog plate.

I own 5, 301's if that tells you anything. The 301 will cost you more than the 15.

Thanks all for the information. I will be going to look at a 15-91 today as I found one on Craigs list in a nearby town. The prices even includes a compact maple cabinet for $45 or OBO. It appears to be in very good condition. My plan is to use it for sewing but I would also like to have to option to use it for FMQing. I have a modern machine capable of almost everything but I'm not really happy with the straight stitch. I'm excite to get the machine. I will also be trying out my grandmother's treadle machine soon. My mom has had it in storage.

If you want to FMQ - go for the 15-91. Sounds like you found one at a decent price. Hope it works out for you! Let us know which machine you end up with.

In my opinion Craigslist is a better idea. No worries about shipping that heavy machine.

Craigslist can work well. We just got back from picking up a nice 15-91 in the #40 cabinet w/stool. The cabinet and stool will need some work but they're basically sound. The machine needs a shroud for the light and a new bulb but beyond that it looks very nice.
