I know there are a TON of 301 users out there though that should be able to say for certain.

Yes There is both a set screw and a thumb screw and since I took it all apart when it wouldn't work I am now putting that back together and it should go in but dosen't! I want to pull my hair out and cry! Still trying.....

Is it possible to get another set of hands - have all the screws lose so that the "extra hands holds everything in place then tighten the screws ? Have you tried putting the needle in while it is all off the machine ? If so can you put the needle in and then attache it back to the machine ?

Ahhhh, if there is a set screw then there may be the extra part, it can go in a couple of ways, someone around here had a link to refurbing their 319 and details how it all goes together. lemme look around.

See if these pictures help ?

The flat side goes to the left on my 301. The needle threads right to left, so the hole has to be facing the pillar. This machine is fussy about the correct side and the correct angle. I usually have to wiggle and jiggle it a bit.

YEAH!!!!! SUCCESS THE FLAT SIDE GOES AWAY FROM THE MACHINE!!!!!! THANK-YOU irishrose you are a life saver!

I was going to say....the flat goes to the left. And don't forget this is a slant shank, so it doesn't go in perfectly vertical. I see you got it, so YAY!!

Thank-you everyone for your input I really thought I was going nuts as my husband says it's just a short put but it now is threaded and I am a happy camper sewing up a storm.

***needle goes in with flat side to the left of throat plate. thread from right to left.**
