Help! My Vintage White Rotary tangles thread around bobbin
 

Can anyone help? I bought a White Rotary because it seemed to run smoothly and looked taken care of. But every time the man at the shop starts to sew, the thread loops around the bobbin case and tangles up and jams. He said he hasn't seen this exact type of bobbin case before and not sure what problem is, but will clean parts and see if that works.Could the problem be in the threading ? possibly the timing? Or maybe even the needle? I am worried I may have thrown away my money....It is a FR429021 I know it is a Franklin Rotary sold by Sears, would anyone know the year?

Welcome to the Quilting Board forum.

The White Rotarys turn opposite Singers and most other machines. In other words the hand wheel turns away from you rather than towards you. If you turn it backwards you'll get all sorts of thread jams.

As far as the needle they generally use the standard 15x1 which goes in flat to the right, and threads left to right.

If you can post a picture we can get a better idea of which machine, or many of us can. I myself can't tell by the serial number what you have.

I agree with Caroline, a picture would be nice. I know you need to have the needle 15x1 facing right, the bobbin placed and threaded right and clicked in a little tricky at first but once it in the proper position and remember the whell like Joe said Wheel turns the opposite they sew like a dream.

A Franklin/ White rotary of this age has the old style hook assembly and hook carrier. The hook can be placed back in the machine 180 degrees off. If all else fails try turning the hook over (top to bottom).

Thank you everyone for your input and knowledge! I think this was the first White Rotary brought to him, but he figured it out and cleaned out the bobbin case and parts and now it is sewing! Caroline, I think my machine might be just like yours except maybe the cabinet, and actually a Family Rotary. It didn't have the manual, but I found some online that appear to be identical to my machine. Franklin Rotary I guess was the branded name put on the machines sold by Sears. In their manual, the machine head looks just like mine. I am excited and relieved, i think it will be a very good machine. Thanks again!

I solved all of my bobbin winding problems by buying a Side Winder (I had a coupon for Hancock's, OK?) which winds bobbins for all machines except some of the new high end machines, no muss and no fuss. And fast, and always with the same directions! Now I don't have to remember all of the details for bobbin making for each machine....and I can get right to sewing. Well worth the few $$$ that I paid!

I sure wish I knew what that OSMG did. My WFR does the same thing, regardless of bobbin case. I know it is threaded correctly and everything is super clean! If only...

Thank you for the information. I have just purchased a White Rotary ( my first vintage machine) which will go to the repairman tomorrow. I finally got it out of the cabinet with the help of my son. Is there a good website for dating it? Thank you for all the information.

I just got my DHs grandmothers white rotary. You have to call Husquevarna-Viking to get the date. The number is:800-446-2333. I haven't called yet to date mine. There are parts missing and no cabinet. SIL was going to throw it out- nooooo! Said it didn't work. I said how do you know when there are parts missing? Don't know if they're somewhere in MILs garage or not. But i rescued what I could find and worry about the rest later.
