Help Needed for Greist Attachment ID
 

Hi,

I recently discovered a box of Greist top clamp attachments and need some ideas as to what machine they would have originally came with. They do not fit Davis and the box is made of velour type material. The notch in the attachments is 3/16" wide and is centered on the needle hole. Thanks for any assistance.

my whites are top clamp and centered I believe I have a box of attachments ( the box was crushed and full of water when I got it so they are rough ) I will try to remember to dig them out and check if the look like this.

I have a set of Greist 3/16 inch attachments for my Franklin-Kenmore 117 that also fit the White Rotary series 77. They also fit the Domestic 153.

Thanks Rudy and Greywuuf. The attachments appear to need a wee bit of cleaning.

I took one more measurement that seems critical which is the distance from "front" of attachment notch to center of needle hole which is 1/2".

That might be National. IIRC White made machines need 5/8" between the notch and needle hole. Macybaby will know for sure.

They look like national. Measure from the front edge of the gap to the needle hole, National is 1/2" and White is 5/8". I have ended up with sets that have a mix of attachments from time to time.

Rudy - the three machines you mention are all made by White - in my research, I've found that figuring out what set of attachments fit goes a long way to determining the Mfg of the machine, well, at least until the time they all adopted Singer's Side clamp method.

By the time the sets came in cardboard boxes, it's narrowed down to basically White, National, Free, Standard and Singer. By this point, Domestic has become the same as White, and New Home is the same as Free. The are also all rotary. And later sets did not include the underbraider or Tucker as part of the basic set. Instead they have the gather foot, edge stitcher and sometimes the zipper foot. And there are a few other feet that were sold separately, it's always neat when you get a set that has some of those tucked in there.

These are all rotary sets. I could not find a picture of all the shirr/underbraider plates so I'll post one of each - mostly pay attention to the difference in those two parts.

This is New Home (late rotary, before Free took over) BTW - the underbraider and shirr plate will also fit on Singer and do show up in aftermarket sets with side clamp feet.

There are even more variations for the VS machines, and they can be harder to tell apart as something it's just a slightly narrower front plate that is different.

Thanks for the pictures and explanation. My attachments do look closest to your National photo. How can you tell if the attachments are for a rotary or VS machine or are they pretty much the same?

from what I've found, only the Shirr plate and Underbraider are different. The feet work on both versions. And for most, even really old top clamp feet will work with a much newer machine of the same Mfg that is also top clamp. And some very old machines that were pre top clamp will accept a top clamp adapter - and then you can use top clamp feet on them.

There are a few, like the Standard that have the same mounting holes in both the rotary and VS versions (and even in the SewHandy) so the shirr plate and underbraider are the same. Most VS machines have a replacement front slide to use with shirring (with the ruffler) or underbraiding, While the rotary machines have additional holes in the machine bed for those two plates to mount.

Here are two National sets - Rotary (came in a box marked "Rotary") and a VS set - minor differences in the look of the feet and the ruffler are due to date of issue, and not that they are Rotary or VS. Greist updated designs from time to time, mostly with the ruffler and some with the tucker. The changes to the feet are more in type set used for the stamp than design changes.

When looking on eBay - you will see a lot of sets with attachments from more than one machine, and sometimes none of the attachments shown in a listing came with the box originally.
