Dianne,
I agree with your Husband in the spray shellac, I would do it by hand if at all. On Mine I just cleaned the painted surfaces with Sewing machine oil and the Brasso for the metal. The shellac treatment is if you are worried about "flaking" of the remaining decals. I have removed the cloth plate to clean it, no problems there. Yes I VERY carefully lay it on it's back to oil the underside for reference, here is mine: |
Ooh -- beautiful! You have the earlier style name badge and painted hand wheel. Lovely machine! Thank you for posting the picture. Have you ever heard of a Jones Hand in a treadle? Why the groove in the wheel?
I will go with sewing machine oil for now.....and see how it responds. Needles? Please, tell me about your needles. Dianne |

Dianne The painted hand wheel usually indicates that it was made for export because plated handwheels changed the item to a luxury item and increased the import/export taxes. Yes! Your measurements should confirm the needle system. Also look for any size or maker information. My original needle (very mashed point) says "JPERKINS 1 1/2" and finding not only the right system but the right size may be essential.
Interesting about the painted vs. plated handwheels. Dianne |
Dianne,
Size Schmetz 120 needle is very large, size 20 or 1.2 mm measured across eye of needle. Most common used needles are 12, 14, 16 or 80, 90, 100 depending on use. I've heard these machines use 29x3 needles which are still available new but do not have one of these machines to verify :( Jon |
Jon, you are so right about needle sizes. I don't know what I was thinking when I got these........that they were some weird old sizing, I guess. Or just wasn't thinking. I do now see them down to size 90 on the website in the UK where these came from, only source I could pull up. At least I can reorder some that should work.

Dianne,
There are a boatload of vendors to choice from online under "29x3", you shouldn't have to order overseas unless you have a favorite vendor there. System 332 is the old European Class designation which is less common but might be mentioned on the needle pack. I hear Organ has smaller shanks than Schmetz or at least they do on my DBx1 needles. Sorry folks, Last night got a bit hectic, so I did not get to measure the needles.
but as an apology, if you PM me with an email address, I can send you a PDF of the manual.... |
