How Do You Find What Model a Machine Is?
 

I found a treadle machine at a barn sale for $35. I could only take a few pics of it before my phone battery died. It is in a wood table cabinet. It will need bobbin parts and a new belt but I don't know what model it is to find parts if I decide to buy it. The serial # is 11064537. Being new to vintage info I don't know how to find the model info for it. I'm more concerned with finding the parts needed to be able to sew with it (and the cost of parts) than the lack of it being "pretty". I learned to sew on one when I was a child and have always wanted to get one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you do a search on the ISMACS site with the serial number, it will tell you the model number. You can also get some more specific info - if needed - but looking at the photos for the decals and tables. Sorry - don't have the exact website handy to post a link. Google singer serial numbers and you'll get there. Tons of info on that site to get you started.

Your machine is a Model 27 and according to ISMACS it was made in 1892.

Sew Classics { http://www.shop.sew-classic.com/ } will have your bobbins and belt. It will take normal 15x1 needles. Hopefully the shuttle ( pointy tubular thingy with the open end the bobbin fits into ) is there in a drawer somewhere. I'm sure they are available, but I don't know where to suggest.

Thanks Joe. I think the the shuttle and bobbin from my other vintage machine will fit this. And I did see some parts on ebay also but wasn't sure of the model #. Still undecided as to whether buy the machine or not. Any suggestions?

You have what they call the Singer Sphinx. I have one just like it but not in a cabinet. would love to find a cabinet that it would fit into and take off the motor. I bought mine for $50 on EBAY. got it cleaned up and the foot controller fixed and ready to go. The guy that packed it didn't do a very good job. lucky it was so heavy they couldn't throw it around. Has a beautiful stitch, but was made in 1898, the yr my Grandma was born and she had one like it.

This one has the table with coffin top cover for the machine so it doesnt drop down into the table but it does have the cover to protect from dust etc.

The cabinet would be worth 35.00 to me, so I'd be on it if it were me.

I have this same machine, got it @ a neighbor's yard sale in April. Mine cleaned up very nice and sews a pretty stitch. This one looks pretty rough - is the paint peeling? I know it's tempting, but you may find one in better shape if you start watching. Once you start looking, these old machines seem to find YOU! Best of luck :)
