Ideal Automatik = Brother ????
1 Attachment(s)
I have this machine:
It is badged as an "IDEAL AUTOMATIK". A decal under the bed says "MADE IN REPUBLIC OF IRELAND", and all the control names are written in German. It had the original 220 V motor on it when I got it. I replaced it with a motor kit from Sew-Classic since I couldn't find a voltage converter for it. Now, this machine is a Brother. Marked underneath J-C 1 witch indicates brother. Obviously a Japanese casting assembled in Ireland for the German market. What I have tried a number of times, on a couple forums is to determine which model Brother this machine corresponds to so I can hunt up a manual. It's similar to a 190, but the 190 does not use cams and this one does. So, I'm asking for help to determine once and for all, what Brother model is this machine? I have exhausted my search ability so any help is appreciated. If anyone needs any more info, just ask. Joe |
with that set of buttons and knobs and dials, I see a sad faced cyclops.... but it is a cool machine. With I knew more...
|
Joe I don't know much but it looks like it would be a dandy machine.

I am not sure what the true colors are on that machine but I find them very soothing. The colors make me want to go curl up somewhere with a nice frothy hot Cappuccino.:)

190 Flairmatic but that doesn't have the disks |
Yeah, the 190 is the closest I've found too. But the controls and the lack of cams make a non match. I'm beginning to think this might have been a European only model with no corresponding Brother machine. I hope not though. Joe

Here's a couple more pics of the machine:
The front bed extension makes sewing big things really easy. It came with a complete set of cams. They work pretty good too. It only came with one foot, so I'm working to put together a basic set of accessories. It's a low shank center homing machine so that shouldn't be too hard. Joe |
I've vowed to limit myself from acquiring any more Japanese type machines, no matter what color, no more Singers, no more Kenmores, no Whites, (well maybe). But if I'd seen that one in the thrift store, I'd be a hop skippin for the checkout line! Is that be extension curved laminate? nice
|
Yes, the extension is a curved laminate. From the edge it actually looks like plywood. There's a little metal tab that hooks into a metal bracket on the end of the base to hold it too.
The machine, extension, and all fits into the suit case right behind it. It a nice machine and I'm going to try to put together a set of attachments for it. Joe |
I really like the bed extension too.
Rodney |
Rodney,
I used the machine yesterday for the first time in a very long time. I'm piecing a large quilt. That bed makes it much easier to use a portable machine on a table for large things. I wish I was able to build a universal one like it for my other portables. Joe |

Hey J Miller!
I have the same machine. Just bought it at a second hand shop for 15€ :-) Mine came with a manual... in German! If you want to, I could scan the pages and e-mail them to you? |

I'll PM you my email addy. When you scan it, please get the front and back cover with the inner covers too. As well as any blank type pages. That way when I print it I can make a duplicate manual. Again, Thanks a bunch. Joe |
Caramelle,
Thanks a bunch. And welcome to the QB. I've been looking for two and half years for that manual. I know it's not in English, but perhaps I can find someone to translate it for me. QB members, Caramelle, went out of her way to scan and email me the manual to my Ideal Automatik. She's in Belgium and is a new sewist. So Caramelle, I'm inviting you to stick around and ask any and all questions you need to. There is so much knowledge here it will make your head spin. Joe |

Hi, Joe! I also have an Ideal Automatik with a complet set of 20 cams and no manual. Could you tell me more about it? I didn't find any information about this machine or, at least, what manual of a brother machine should I looking for? (Excuse my bad English :o)
|
The only thing I've been able to find out about mine is it was made by Brother. I've not found a corresponding Brother manual for it though. There are some similar models, but none exactly like these Ideal Automatic machines.
The lady I got my German language manual from posted one time to send me the manual and not since. I've yet to get it translated. I wish I could help more, but to tell the truth, I'm still in the dark with this machine. Joe |
Thank you for your reply.
I wonder if you have the possibility to send me a copy of your german manual..perhaps i can translate it. Thank you |

Joe try this? google search found several sites, it doesn't look like this cost? IDK have not used it. on a side note, I wrote something in Spanish last week on facebook and then got pop up ads in Spanish. What a hoot. |
Joe, You might want to contact the local high school to see if they have a German language teacher who could help you translate. Some times the internet translators can get you confused. Just a thought!

sews,
The manual was sent to me as a many page .jpg. The original sender sent it in many emails. To send it out I'd have to do a ton of cropping and editing and I don't have the tools to save a .jpg as a .pdf. Thanks anyway. Joe |
OMG. How did I miss this thread when I joined QB? Yes Joe, it's built by Brother. And Yes, the Flairmatic is as close as you'll get in a US distributed machine. Your machine is from the 1960s, a little later than the Flairmatic. What do you need to know as far as operating it? It's a very easy to use machine. And if you ever want to re home it, my Flairmatic says she'd love to have a playmate that looks like her, lol. Seriously.

I'll have to check and see how much trouble it would be to crop the blank stuff out to reduce the file size. Joe |
What do you say about my machine Ideal Automatik? It isn't identical with yours, Joe... but i don't figure out if it is latest or oldest than your machine.
Raluca |
Raluca,
My response is right after your post. I have very little info on mine. I have no idea if yours is older or newer. I suspect both are 1960s vintage but I just don't know. Joe |

Raluca Your machine and Joes' are real close. I'd put his from the early 1960s and yours is a year or two newer. Cari |
Thank you! :o
