If you could have ANY needle remade, which one would it be?
 

assuming that one would need to order 5,000-8,000 per order.


I have begun a conversation with three needle makers on the subject of custom made needles.
Essentially asking if there was an interest in producing a "historical" line of needles.


Schmetz has already replied and given be a general breakdown of what is needed, but the FIRST thing is to decide which one to reproduce.


They even indicated that they still have dies for many of the discontinued needles.... oh the possibilities!!!!
Thoughts?

Right off the top of my head:

127x1 sizes 12, 14, 16, 18

206x13 sizes 12, 14, 16, 18

20x1 sizes 12, 14, 16, 18

Schmetz still offers the 206x13 in 12 and 14, but we do use heavier thread on heavier materials and also need the 16s and 18s. Same comment for all needle systems.

Based on the cost, it would probably make more sense to start with needles that are unavailable completely, then fill in the missing sizes, but keep the feedback coming.

I am thinking OLD curved needles, or 12x1, or 13x1, but others have also suggested 20x1

I'd be interested in these too.

Wow, I have no idea what the different needles you mention even are. I didn't know there WERE different needles for machines, other than the size variations for fabric type.

Don't feel bad. Before I married my wife I thought all sewing machines were black and looked like Singer Mdl 15s.
My mother and everyone else I'd seen sew had either the black Singers or black clones. But when I married my wife she had a Singer 538. Square, beige, lots of knobs and dials and it used cams. Wow!

Once there click on "User Brochure" in the left column, then download the "Batch Download" at the top. You'll see needles you never dreamed of.

After that go to ISMACS { http://ismacs.net/needle_and_shank/home.html } and check through their needle sections. It's a facilitating part of sewing machines. And a critical part. Without a needle the best sewing machine is a door stop.

I’m know that there have been several needle types discontinued over the years, but I haven’t done enough research to learn what obsolete needles would benefit the machines that I have. I’m not even up to speed on the substitute needles that have been found/developed to take the place of obsolete needles in some cases, so I’m not much help in figuring out the “most likely candidate” for custom manufacturing.

I agree that to justify the expense, it would best be one that is “nearly impossible” to find, and also in high demand.

Ok we now have a quote from Schmetz for making 12x1 needles


They can manufacture this needle again with a minimum order of 10,000 needles in one size only (NM 80, NM 90 or NM100. Delivery is about 6 to 8 months. Price is US $ 52.80 per box of 100 needles.
