I saw one listed for $55 and called right away. She explained that they were selling their old sewing machines to buy school clothes. I felt dishonest for snatching it at that price because she was ignorant of their value. I told her what they were worth and suggested she relist it right away. She did so, but called me back to offer it to me for $155 because of my honesty. My husband gave his blessing, and I have it being serviced right now! I paid a little more than I had to, perhaps, but I got a good deal and have a clear conscience. If you have a smart phone or check your email often, you might try signing up for alerts on CL.

Attended a quilt auction last weekend. The last thing I need is another machine, but this auctioneer had no idea what he had. He started it at $25. I think it went for $370. Everyone in the audience was a quilter well aware of the market. We corrected him on every miss identified pattern and if the quilt was displayed upside down or not. He will learn.

You and your group just may be consulted in the future and the recipient of some great deals. You should give the auctioneer your contact information.

I responded to an ad in the paper for a Singer, after discovering it was a FW, I went straight over. He was asking $30 for it, I gave him $60 as it was still a great deal.

I have had a FW on my want list it seems like forever-and I am always seeing all these neat deals everyone else stumbles onto...well last week was finally my turn....I belong to a on line auction group and for some reason it was only me & one other gal bidding....I won! I was so excited my parrot started screaming yippie...lol
She needs a new cord but for 65.00 I can do a new cord. So just keep trying when its meant to be it will happen, i have waited over 7 years-hopefully you won't have to wait that long

If you think that is bad, I have seen no less than 4 featherweights being given away (for free) on Freecycle over the years. Unfortunately, they were all gone by the time I got the message. Obviously, they are being given away by people that have no idea of their value.

Actually I've bought a dozen FWs at that price because people don't know what they have, or there is a birds nest under the bobbin and they don't know what to do or they just need cleaning - 2 were brand new, never used white ( or celery ) in perfect condition. Just have to keep your eyes open.

Or tried to sell them, but couldn't. Sometimes timing is everything with things like antique sewing machines. Buyers have to be there when the seller is selling. Otherwise, no sale.
