Kenmore 14001 (low shank version)

Finally broke the curse of just missing out on Kenmore listings on CL. Now I have a Kenmore 1400 from 1971 with a narrow cabinet. And a knee control that needs to be checked and cleaned and maybe rewired. And a buttonhole plate only. And the handwheel knob is absolutely stuck right now so I cannot take anything off to look inside. Will it have one drive belt or two???

This one is very light green. A much prettier green to me than the 1217. It also has stretch stitch although only four kinds but that is enough. It has the clever needle plate insert and that makes it a center homing straight stitcher. This one I will keep. But it is very hard to be sitting here and waiting for the oil to get into the handwheel.

Pictures will come when I get the side plate off and find out about the drive belts. It turns over now but so hard I was afraid to do more than get the needle bar all the way up and take out half a needle. The other half must have fallen out before because the bobbin area was clean enough.

Too late to edit. I meant 158.14001 for the title and Kenmore 1400 for just in the post. :hunf:

It has 2 belts. Here's the parts blow-up from Sears Parts Direct http://www.searspartsdirect.com/kenm...814001&shdPart= You can also download/copy a free manual from there.

The handwheel was REALLY hard to turn on one of my Kenmores. When you get the side off, look at the dual pulley for the belts. Mine had dried grease on the end where the shaft turns. After I cleaned that off & put a little Triflow there, it spun freely.

That is the parts manual! Thank you!

I promised pictures once I knew what I had. So.

The top was not held on very well so I have gotten that off just now and gotten some oil to the handwheel and everything else on the top. The stitch length is locked up and the handwheel is still stiff so I think the stuck part is actually on the bottom having to do with the feed dogs. It has to stand up for a few hours more though for the top oil.

Also thank you all the people who talked about the weak bobbin winder posts. I was patient and oiled it right away and only tried to move it now. It is fine.

Like I said, check the axle on the dual pulley. Dried grease there was causing my handwheel to be very stiff.

That looks like the one I just got. High Shank? The manual I downloaded there didn't seem to match. I have to get a plug to fit or the complete foot pedal and power cord. I was able to test it with one off a different machine and it sews great. This one is being cleaned up for a beginning sewer I know.
