Okay here is something to help you with the parts of the machine. I know that we have a lot of names for different things depending on the part of the world your standing on but this graphic should help us get on the same page. Now when you guys PM me about a part you need for your machine you can look at this and tell me exactly what it is your after. Although I do love looking for a thingamabob thats next to the doomaflicker! :P

But this will also help you in your ventures of servicing your own machine because when the manual refers to a part you know where they are talking about.

So here you go and if I can find more detailed graphics of the underside and the needle bar area I will post them.

Thank you Billy. I think you finally got tired of us gals calling sewing machine parts thing-a-ma-bobs and whatchadoozies!!! Now, If you could just teach those people on ebay to describe things accurately.........

But my sewing machine has a do-hicky; it's right next to the thingamajig under THAT thing. >.<

Thank you for posting this picture. I will have to save it somewhere in case I have to describe stuff to my repair guy.

Thanks Billy...Hey that looks like my machine LOL

Lostn51 04-13-2011 05:44 PM

I am trying to find some of the underside of the machine and the inside of the needle bar area. If I can I will just take a few shots and label the parts for you all.

Here is the answer to the million dollar question........"How do I get my tensioner back together" :D

Billy,
I found an old black Japanese sewing machine, cleaned it up and everything seems ok but the tension had everything missing but the hole. I tried to put one together from a front tension but I think something might be missing on the very back inside somewhere. I have rebuilt other tensions so getting one together is no problem. Any suggestions? Is there anything special about those kind of tension?

SEW 04-23-2011 03:43 AM

Thanks Billy! I will bookmark this for future reference.

Do you have the adjuster that the entire assembly fits into. Its like an inner sleeve that goes into the faceplate (if it is a model 15).

There is an inner sleeve - it is a Univeral I think it is similar to a model 15.
I think it would be a pretty good machine if I can get it to work.

nothing moves when the take up lever moves

oops somehow I lost the pictures - I'll try again
I can pretty much assemble a donor tension in the sleeve. I think a piece is missing - possibly some kind of spring. It does not engage when the take up lever goes up or down.

ok the pictures turned up. LOL sewing machines I can do but pictures drive me nuts. I got the tension to assemble but I don't think it is right. I'm going to take a pic of the machine. This machine was salvaged from a flood. I did a lot of clean up and it turns beautifully. I think it would be a very powerful machine. I was surprised how well it cleaned up and that there was no rust in the bobbin area.

Is your table a hollow core door with a machine insert set over a treadle base? Did you add support to the underside? A store nearby sells slightly damaged doors for $5. I might want to get another one. I already use one hollow core door on three filing cabinets :supplies and patterns in the file drawers, and huge ironing mat and cutting mat on top.

Yeah its a hollow core door with a filing cabinet on one end and a cabinet under the other. I put 3/4" MDF on the underside and mounted my treadle under it sitting on a stand. I am going to have a solid plank for the next quilting table in the addition. It will be 48x140 finished and I will be able to walk around it on 3 sides.

okay you are missing a couple of pieces on your tensioner. Here are photos of mine to give you an idea.

Billy

miriam 04-24-2011 04:45 PM

It looks like your lever has much closer contact with the back of the tension than mine does. That thing doesn't come close on mine. The tension in the pic was robbed off a donor machine from the same flood probably off a very rusty Singer 66. I'm thinking that lever should hit a pin in back of the tension. I wonder if there is another spring or something inside.

miriam 04-24-2011 04:52 PM

The motor is missing but I have the wheel off the 66 if it will fit & some treadle legs in the garage.

Wow, nice to have that much room. My sewing room doubles as a guest room, so am always looking for better configurations for sewing and storage.

tammy cosper 04-25-2011 08:38 PM

Does anyone have any info on the singer merritt machines?
If so please pm me.
Thanks

TacoMama 04-25-2011 08:40 PM

Thanks so much for the info!!!!!!!!!

Thats why it isnt working because it is the wrong tensioner. The 15 is a completely different animal than the 66. I can have the tensioners for the 15 if you need one. Just PM me and I can give you the details.
