Look what I got! A 301A! and is anything missing from this picture???

Yesterday was the 1/2 off day at Goodwill, which includes the furniture only store right around the corner from my house, where they sell sewing machines in cabinets!!! I got a 301A in its cool little table that it clicks into, and a dual table that holds a serger on one side and a machine on the other for $19.50. (Insert heavenly music chord here.)
So, the big question is- is there anything missing from the bobbin area? Besides a bobbin. What kind do these babies use, anyway?

And here's a picture of the whole thing.

And this is the way it attaches to the cabinet, for those who have never seen it before. It lays in the tray and the clip (yellow arrow) holds it in, and you just press to release.

Wow, you got a great early Christmas gift from Santa !!! :) I love using my 301. It's a wonderful machine. The bobbins are the same as the Featherweight.
Soooo happy for you!! Have fun!

Stitchnripper 11-25-2017 05:05 PM

That is a great score!!!

Do you know where is the best place to buy them? And are they the type D?

I love my 301A! You got yours for a steal!

The bobbins should be either Singer #45785 or #A1225 (the website says they are alternate part numbers).

Looking at the photo, you have the bobbin case, and I don't see anything missing, so you should be good to go :)

Looking up the part number reminds me that I needed to find a new walking foot, since a piece of mine broke recently (still usable, but the plastic is a little brittle, so I should replace it before I need it!)

Congratulations on a great machine! You must be so happy and it looks to be in fine condition. I have bought bobbins from Nova Montgomery's Featherweight website as it is the same bobbin as the Featherweight. https://www.novamontgomery.com/

What a bargain!

I bought my bobbins, FMQ foot and replacement bobbin winder tire from Aprils1930sshoppe which is now The Featherweight Shop. If you like a lot of bobbins, I'd purchase the ten pack of repros and a three pack of original ones. My machine seems to like originals for FMQ and reproduction ones for anything else.

Boy did you score good!!!
Even at paying the original price was good!
Love, love my 301's too as well as the FWs.... enjoy it!

I don't know where you can get them, sorry. I would ask the vintage machine shop here on the board. They are very helpful. I haven't had to buy them because my machines came with some.
OH- The Featherweight Shop is a great website. Loads of info and very nice people to do business with.

Mickey2 11-26-2017 07:24 AM

These are good. I don't know if any seller test their bobbins individually anymore, but this is one of more reputable places to buy from.

Bluelady 11-26-2017 10:07 AM

They are awesome machines!! And so easy to work on, just like a Featherweight.. Great find!

ppquilter 11-26-2017 03:13 PM

WOW great find with a table and the cradle for the 301 too! I just got one similar this summer. just the cradle alone on ebay usually sells for $45. SCORE!!

themadpatter 11-26-2017 06:20 PM

See, I knew you'd all appreciate the great deal I got, lol. I have a couple of weird bobbins that don't seem to fit anything I own. (I think I got them in a grab bag.) One of them fits into the bobbin holder, and I think I'll try it while waiting for the others to arrive. If it works, great, if not, nothing lost. I'm rearranging the sewing area to fit in the new crew. I'm going to have a couple I have to kick off the island. Trying to decide between a maiden voyage on Craigslist, or just giving them to girls from work for Christmas. That does sound like a lot more fun.

I own a mocha 301A but mine is a long bed. You will love piecing on it. It sews a great straight stitch. I just pop mine out of the cradle, grab the handle and take it to quilting class. Enjoy it!

SusieQOH 11-27-2017 05:53 AM

I don't know if you know anything about vintage machines so forgive me on this but be sure to oil and clean it properly before you use it. My old Singers love oil and grease.

Sewnoma 11-27-2017 08:04 AM

Wonderful! I really love slant-shank Singers, they are my favorite 'breed' of vintage machine, and it's hard to pick a favorite but the 301 is a marvelous stitcher. This will be a great machine for taking to classes!

http://shop.sew-classic.com/ is a great source for most things you'll need for this machine. They have the bobbins you need ("Bobbins class 221 301 Metal 10 pack") for $3.99 right now. :) My 301 had a broken tension spring and rotted feet and a few other issues - I was able to order everything from Sew Classic and now she sews like new!

Congrats on your new "baby". :)

montanajan 12-16-2017 09:25 PM

Congrats! I bought my 301 and a large box of attachments on line last year ... Goodwill of Florida, had it shipped to my home in Montana. I recommend having yours serviced before much use. Mine runs so smoothly. I love the sound of the mechanical machines. Also, the slant shank is the best! Enjoy.

quilterpurpledog 12-17-2017 04:01 AM

Great find! I have two vintage Singers, a featherweight and a 401A. I love them both. All I need is more time so I could sew more.

Mariposa 12-20-2017 08:36 PM

Wow! What a great score!! Neat that you got the machine and the table! Happy stitching~

HelenAnn 12-21-2017 05:08 AM

I learned on the 301 and now own a couple of them. Easy to maintain. You got a great deal.

Brass Head 12-27-2017 05:18 PM

My wife inherited her mother's 301. Spiffy-looking, and never misses a beat.

I have the same. 301A mocha long bed. It was my mother's machine and the one I learned to sew on. I pieced the log cabins for a wearable art car coat I made a couple years ago. Wonderful machine. You'll love it.

Can you post a pic of your machine in the cradle? Did you have to mod the cabinet? AFAIK the long bed won't fit in any standard cabinet and the card table for the 301 long bed doesn't use the cradle.

Cari, you're asking Briarberry, right?

Yes I am. Now a question for you, how are you liking your 301? It's another one of my favorite Singers.

Yes, I know what the cradle looks like, I have two of them. The cradle fits cabinets made for the 400 series on up and holds a 301 short bed machine. Briarberry said she uses her long bed in a cradle so I was asking to see her set up.
