Looking forhelp with a Singer 457A found machine
 

Was given this machine by a family member, and it was hardly used. When trying it out, it seemed to not take off and keep going, but did run a little. If it is tightened where you untighten to thread the bobbin, what else could be causing this? I would appreciate any info I receive, as I would like to keep this machine. Thank you.

Googled the machine and it looks like a belt is on the bottom. Check that and see if it is okay. From there I don't know. Maybe go all over bobbin area [clean out] oil everything with a drop of oil. Do you have the manual? Read up and go from there. I know this isn't much help, and I know nothing about this machine. By the way Welcome to this board. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on here.

Ooh Nana this is Barny. I re-googled and this seems to be an industrial machine. I SURE DON'T know anything about it. Looks really good and really tough. Wait for someone else on here to get with you, before you do anything. Keep it. Barny

According to ISMACS the Singer 457 is a domestic, not an industrial.

It has an internal motor belt and a timing belt on the under side. If the machine will not take off it probably is in dire need of lubrication. It also could be the motor belt is too tight. Or the motor is worn out or gummed up.

Lots of things to check, but I would start with a thorough cleaning and oiling first.

Also the vertical shaft top gear is plastic and prone to breakage. That is the first thing to check.

That's likely the machine the OP is referring to, but a Bing search for "Singer 457A" returns results for an industrial machine.

Hmmmm, ISMACS didn't mention a 457A. I wonder if sometimes there's gaps in their machine list.

I'll do some more searching and see what I can find too.

Found the 457A on Google ..... wow! That's one I'd like to play with. :D

I thought this too, Joe. The 457A looks like a real beast! It does seem likely that the OP is referring to a stylist, though. I'm sure she'd have mentioned it if it were twice the size and weight of a domestic.
