looking for quick answer for featherwieght
 

I have my featherwight apart that I purchased but have not used. it's in very good shape but I am trying to oil it up to use. got the oil done according to manual instructions. now to lube gears.

do do I need to clean old lubricant off gears before putting on new? what should I use?

do I use lots of lubricant or just sparingly?

I know on my 401 I took an old stiff tooth brush to the old lube and scraped ay excess off. And wiped also. Then oiled and reapplied. Check YouTube for FW maintenance and lubing. Couple of the guys here will be able to help also. You may want to pm them. If you have a manual it should tell and show you what to do. Otherwise, You Tube.

I was told not to, if it looked like it had enough to leave it. This advice came from "The old sewing machine man" here in Florida.

Some of that old lub is hard as rocks. Take all you can off, GENTLY, and then re-lube. And oil anything that moves as Joe says. I just brought a friends machine home and it had NO oil on it. I don't understand why people don't oil. They change oil in their cars. Don't they?

Barny: No, not everyone puts oil in their cars. My brother-in-law burned up his nice new truck that way. Never put oil in or had it changed. A couple years later he wondered why it wouldn't run so well--or at all. Need I say I think I married the right brother?

Nova Montgomery suggests using kerosene to clean the gears. She has a special oil for lubricating. My husband used a synthetic car oil on my FWs. Been years, Purrs like kittens.
