SINGER J A8 or something like that is printed underneath the machine bed. Anyone know anything about this interesting piece? I could get it for a steal. thanks! Jordan |
Neat looking machine. Japanese manufacturers used a JA code to show who made the machine. If the machine was made in Japan that could be the manufacturer code. I know some Singers were made in Japan. I don't know Singer history well enough to know if they had their own plant there.
I would get it. I like the case and the machine. Rodney |
How could I authenticate (if that is even possible) the machine to see if it truly is SINGER or if it was farmed out? It's as heavy as you would expect it to be, very heavy. I wouldn't mind telling them to price it up for that matter. I don't need it and they resell for a crisis center.

I would buy it for the case alone. Those are hard to come by in the US from what I have seen.
The only one I have seen here in Ohio was an oddball 191 made in Japan. It was pretty much new in package and went for good money. |
I have one of those. Does the machine stitch? It seems like a well made machine. For the time period it is better than most Singer machines. Look behind the bobbin and see if gears are clogged with lint. Mine was clogged and the gears were bound up with the consistency of playdough. I had to re-time it. I think you could put that on a treadle and have zz and blind stitch as well as ss.

I'd have grabbed it for the case alone!
The model number should be on the reverse lever plate. |
Oh, what a gorgeous machine and case - I'd have grabbed that in a heartbeat!

Did you go and get it?
