My Bargain $125 Featherweight

4 Attachment(s)
This is the Featherweight that I found on CL for $125. I was really surprised that it was still available when I called because I noticed that it was listed the day before. The two older ladies, age 74 which is my age, didn't know anything about the machine how it worked or its history. From the looks of it I don't think it has been used very much as the decals are in near perfect condition. I have two questions. 1. Is the pedal an original that Singer made before the bakelight pedals? 2. What is the powdery stuff on the cord, is it a problem if I leave it, or should I have it rewired. The case has a slight musty smell but otherwise is in fairly nice condition. Does anyone know how to get the musty smell out. I have been on the net and there seems to be many ideas but I was wondering if anyone here has actually had experience with removing the musty smell.

Great deal! Powder is normal lead dust. Don't mess with it unless insulation shows issues elsewhere. It was a protective covering. The pedal is authentic on early ones. What serial number? Lucky you! I've paid less but they were rough.

Congrats on the Featherweight!
As for the musty smell...there are many ways to try. I baked the smell out of mine by putting the case outside and letting the hot sun basically bake it out. Other ways didn't work for me.

Thanks for the info on the powdery stuff. I will leave it alone as no bare wires are exposed. The serial number is AH986094 and according to Imacs it was made on December 9, 1948

Can you replace the drip pan pad?
They can hold odors

Ooooh very pretty!

I have a question regarding the "lead dust". Is it dangerous as in will it powder off where you set the machine and can you inhale it?
