My first "modern" machine ..... LOL
 

I was scrolling through the topics this morning and saw one titled "My first vintage machine" I got a giggle out of that because until recently the only machines I've been around are vintage. My mothers 1950s HOTHER, my wife's mid 70s Singer 538, etc.
Only recently did we barter into the Singer 3810 plastic wonder. It's in a bag somewhere on a shelf awaiting a new bobbin case and table. After that it will probably be rehomed. I am not overly impressed with it. It works but ..... no soul.

My first "modern" machine was a new Singer. I hated it. It just was not the same as the ones I remember sewing on in school, so I started looking for vintage ones. I have 21 vintage ones and just that one new Singer that never gets used. I much prefer my old vintage Singers.

The only one of our "new" Singers that gets used is the 4622A. A mid 90s machine that has 20 some patterns and a 6 mm wide ZZ. It gets used occasionally. It works fine, but I don't like the sound these newer machines make.

My only new machine was a Necchi portable purchased in 1974. I liked it ok, and it lasted for almost 30 years during the time period in my life when I worked full time and didn't sew very much. About 5 years ago a friend gave me a re-worked Viking from the 1990's with lots of nice stitches. The problem was that the electronic motherboard had been replaced by one from a different model, so the panel didn't match the function. Plus some of the electronic features didn't work. I gave that to my niece who sews rags together to make rugs.

I don't know if there will ever be another "modern" machine in my life. I am doing fine with my Pfaff 130, FW, and 301 -- all used regularly.

My only new machine is a Viking Sapphire 875, mostly it gets used for Free motion quilting. It has a lovely 10" throat space. Otherwise I use either a treadle or one of the vintage electric machines.
My treadles are a Pfaff 60, Singers 201K,15-90,66 and 237 zig zag. The electrics are Singer FW,301 and Pfaff 1222E.
