My Friday Saga; Quest to Get a Featherweight

3 Attachment(s)
I contacted a random vague post on Craigslist about a "portable Singer" and a "floor standing Singer". After a nice back and forth chat she sent pictures and we agreed on a price and pick up time. Both machines were in a garage at a grandparents house that they were clearing out, she was going to go get them and I would pick them up in Dayton. Well, it started raining and she couldn't go pick up the machines because the "floor standing" machine didn't fit in her car and she didn't want to move them in a pickup. I went to pick them up myself.
After a 2 hour drive down to southern most Ohio I get to the very rural location. When I turn off the main road to the house I have to wait for cows.

I realize at this point that I am a very city girl because I don't know how to get them to move. I honked but that just caused other cows to moo. Maybe they were telling this girl to mooove?

For my trouble I received my very first featherweight!

And a Red Eye that I'm trying to rapidly rehome. The deal was to buy both, so I did. They ended up throwing a king sized quilt frame in my car too. Overall it was well worth the trip.

I'd keep them both. Nice find.

Congratulations! Well worth the saga!

Ivey 05-17-2014 03:33 AM

Wow, both are beautiful!

lovelyl 05-17-2014 04:16 AM

Congrats! Great score! The FW looks showroom new!

Me too!!! Great photo of the cows also.

amcatanzaro 05-17-2014 04:40 AM

The FW isn't showroom at all. There's all kinds of paint scrapes. She's perfect for me. I'm at least the third owner too, there's a name and 1974 inside the machine.

I have a red eye with fairly special meaning already. :)

ThayerRags 05-17-2014 04:52 AM

Ok, take the Red Eye back and get the calf?

I'm laughing about the cows and wondering at what point you almost ( key word: almost!) gave up. Nothing will stand between a quilter and his/her FW!

wilburness 05-17-2014 05:13 AM

the cow story is classic. love it. enjoy your FW!

My luck the calf would have Pink Eye!

I love your Featherweight! When comparing it with mine, yours looks like new. I know you will enjoy sewing on it. My Featherweight looks well used; but it sews like a dream. By the way, I so enjoyed seeing your picture of the cows.

pocoellie 05-17-2014 07:04 AM

If I was closer to you, I'd snap up that Redeye in a heartbeat. Beautiful machines and a great looking cabinet.

Mariposa 05-17-2014 08:08 AM

Terrific finds! Gotta love the cows! :)

Candace 05-17-2014 08:16 AM

Sounds like a fun adventure.

Sunflowerzz 05-17-2014 09:51 AM

What a wonderful fun story, I just love happy endings!:D

mmmmmmm. steak. I don't have room for that either. We have city ordinances against livestock anyways. I wanted chickens too.
:D It's funny. I live (and grew up here) in a bigger sized small town. I'm too country for the city and too city for the country.

nwm50 05-18-2014 05:31 AM

That's an great and I mean GREAT looking FW. The treadle isn't bad looking either so I guess you scored really good!!

I have that same problem. Lived out in the country for a while but didn't fit in. Moved closer to town but not in and I find it better but miss the the less traffic, less crowded part of the country. Downsized so now I don't have as much room for these beautiful old machines. Love the red eye but not the pink eyed calf! Hope you find an appropriate home for it. Nice that you finally got the FW you wanted.

Edited: Just noticed .... it looks like that red eye has been motorized? Don't like that idea although at the time it was probably modernized for the sewer. Still, I would certainly take it back to a treadle.

Two nice looking machines! Plus an adventure you can always look back on...

Prim Quilts 05-18-2014 08:36 AM

Oh my gosh, those are both excellent machines. Lucky you. BTW a lot of people will honk their horn in the field to call the cows that it's time to eat. They all moo a lot then.

Rodney 05-18-2014 09:32 AM

The red eye looks like it's in great shape but if you already have one that has meaning to you then it makes sense to get rid of it.
Congrats on your new featherweight.
Rodney

worth the wait and wasn't it nice to get out of the city

tessagin 05-18-2014 10:00 AM

Not too often will cows move when dinner is in play! Yep Worth the trouble!

Groooooooooooooooan!!!

Good one!!!

oldtnquiltinglady 05-18-2014 11:09 AM

Such a story. I love when we have good stories on our posts every day. I would have been aggravated like you probably were because the cows wouldn't move, but would have know that the horn was call to food for them. I don't remember what you had to do to get them to moooooooove; waiting them out was not an option, huh?

Mrs. SewNSew 05-18-2014 11:30 AM

Congrats on the Featherweight! I am patiently waiting for my own to appear. The Red Eye is a nice looking one too! I think you had a productive day! Love the cow story too. i would have been just as lost, a little honking, maybe trying to "shoo" them. :)

wolph33 05-18-2014 11:31 AM

wow-well worth the trip and a red eye to boot.

sdhaevrsi 05-18-2014 03:37 PM

What a happy story, complete with happy cows. Thanks for sharing.

Just drive slowly towards them. They will move.
Beautiful featherweight, btw.

mandyrose 05-19-2014 02:43 AM

lucky! lucky! you.... love the cows looks like it was feeding time you know how babies are.....enjoy your machines

QuiltingVagabond 05-19-2014 03:20 AM

I love it when the description is so vague, because it ususally means the seller doesn't know what they have. My featherweight came from just such an ad. I think it was "old ornate sewing machine" or something along that line, and bidding was low and light.

I missed this comment: yes, it's been motorized but the cord is s.h.o.t. and the motor is super questionable to me. The machine had a light at some point but it's gone. I have someone coming to love it/buy and it and they are going to take it back to a treadle.

GreyQ 05-19-2014 04:34 AM

What a fun trip and fabulous machines!

purplefiend 05-19-2014 10:42 AM

I'd keep them both. Do a motorectomy on the treadle machine and put a treadle belt on it. She'll be much happier. :D

Both machines look great. The cows are pretty cool too. Just purchased my first Featherweight from Craigslist - I am the third owner as the seller decided she prefers treadles and needed to move a machine out.

Cheers, K

caspharm 05-19-2014 01:58 PM

Great deal! Wish I lived close. I like the red eye. Enjoy the FW.

So glad to hear all of that! Nice that you found someone to do just what should be done.

amcatanzaro 05-20-2014 04:11 PM

A very nice man just picked it up about an hour ago along with a 127 I haven't touched since it got here last fall.

Woohoo! Down two, time to go shopping!
