my new 66!

So, here she is! I hope this worked, otherwise this is going to be a long thread by me trying to post pictures.
Here goes …
As you can see (I hope), she looks like me after I've been painting the ceiling with a long napped roller. Some grease/oil build-up too. The cords aren't frayed or taped and look to be in good condition. The nose plate and decals are in better shape than I remembered (I know it was only yesterday, but I'm a woman of a certain age and I had 2 other machines dancing in my head too).

The veneer is starting to peel off on the table, but if we can't repair it (again after reading Glenn's tut and watching the videos), DH has been playing with making veneer from the black walnut trees we had to cut down from around the house. Is that an okay thing to do?

I forgot to add the picture of the attachments...

The box of attachments were in the drawer.
Sorry about the pictures turned sideways. I'll keep trying to get this figured out.

But I was able to post pictures!

leonf 01-09-2020 03:09 PM

I've been known to use kabob skewers for spool pins till I can get replacements. and you got a fabric guide on the bed. Nice.
my pics still get sideways sometimes. We are pretty forgiving here.

Bags 01-09-2020 03:13 PM

Well I've got kabob skewers and arrosticini skewers. One of those should work. I want to take my time and do it the best way that I can. But I can't wait to start sewing on this one, too.

OurWorkbench 01-09-2020 05:30 PM

Congratulations. That is a neat cabinet. I'm not sure if it is a 304 or 306. I don't know how to tell the difference, but I do like it.

Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

WIChix 01-09-2020 06:23 PM

From ismacs, the 304 accepts a full size in a portable base. I didn't see the 306, so likely that is what bags has, and me.

Maybe your 101? It is in the 101-4 & 12 manual.

Congratulations!

WIChix 01-10-2020 04:14 AM

The 101 has the same footprint as the 115, 7"x14.5".

luvstoquilt 01-10-2020 05:06 AM

Fun project! The collecting begins!

juliasb 01-10-2020 07:01 AM

You have to just love it!! I can't wait to see what you do with it. Restoring it will be an act of great love. Congratulations on this new vintage machine.

Bags 01-10-2020 12:39 PM

Thank you everyone! Yep juliasb, I do love it! I'm looking forward to restoring it. I'll keep you all updated. It's going to be a little while before I can start, company coming and other things have to be done first.

Just like with the 27-Pheasant, yes I went back and got her too, if you see anything from the pictures that I should address first or right away, don't hesitate to let me know. I welcome all tips and suggestions.

I've got the manuals saved to download, but I'm sure I'm going to have all sorts of questions.

Off to clean the house!

WIchix and Janey, I don't know if this photo will help identifying the table. I've looked at the ismacs site and can't identify it.

SusieQOH 01-10-2020 01:52 PM

The first thing I noticed was the large throat space! Are you planning to use it for machine quilting?
Congratulations- it's a beauty!

bkay 01-10-2020 03:11 PM

What Janey and WIChix are talking about is a Singer cabinet 304 or 306. Apparently, they are not common. I didn't understand what they were talking about either, so started searching. This will explain it:
http://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_mach...y/304_cab.html

Apparently, the 304 is wider than the 306, which, apparently, you and WIChix both have. Janey is commenting that the table was probably sold with a Singer 101 sewing machine originally.

I've never seen one of those tables, so I originally thought the one you had was missing the fold out leaf.

Congrats on the machine.

bkay

OurWorkbench 01-10-2020 06:10 PM

What bkay said. I may have seen one or the other in real life, once. I may have seen one or the other on Craigslist a few times. I am kind of surprised that ismacs doesn't list the 306 cabinet. The 306 cabinet can be seen in the 101 manual which can be found at https://res.cloudinary.com/singer-se...g_Machines.pdf

I've looked at those cabinets on ismacs and I still don't see one like this one. Difference being, it doesn't have a fold-out leaf and the drawer/door is on the side.

If not today (company coming), I'll try and get more detailed pictures of the cabinet, the top, sides, etc. and start a new thread. And if I don't get it posted tomorrow, the storm that's headed this direction will be just as bad as what they're predicting and we'll have lost electricity.

WIChix 01-11-2020 07:42 AM

Yup, 306 cabinet!

leonf 01-11-2020 08:49 AM

See, You'll need a hand crank tonight. Quick go buy 1 or 6.

99 on the right, 28 Blackslide VS on the left.

Little tip
The wheel for my bobbin threader was trashed. and i had no time to order another
I cut a 1/4'' wide strip of leather. and applied contact cement to the wheel and the leather, let it sit for 5 minutes. then put the leather on the wheel. then trimmed it to length

SusieQOH, I won't be doing large quilts. At least not yet lol. But I sew larger bags that were really hard to shove through the small space on my Bernina 215. I have started FMQ, a little. That's been fun.

LeonF, that was my thought exactly.

frodo, thanks for tip. I've added it to my tips and suggestions list.

I'm trying to find manuals with clear pictures or drawings so I can see what's missing or needs to be replaced, etc. I've watched the video that was suggested, and I've cut and pasted parts of Glenn's thread too.

Bags 02-03-2020 06:29 AM

Thank you Janey, bkay and WIChix! I finally, looked through the rest of the manual for the 101 and sure enough there was the table like mine. A 306.

When I first looked at the manual, I only saw the 40 on the first couple of pages, so needless to say I was very confused. Can I write that off to being a woman of a certain age?

Thank you!

Carol

You will get many years of service out of your 66! I too have one and it sings when I use it. Best of luck getting it where you want it to be so it too will sing!

Bags 02-03-2020 07:10 AM

Thanks juliasb! I think all she needs is a new belt. Can't wait to start sewing with her. I'll keep you all posted.

leonf 02-03-2020 07:36 AM

You'll need to trim the treadle belt to size and poke ( or drill) a hole for the staple. you want it a bit loose. Be careful no tto stab yourself if the belt rolls.

Better not punch a hole in the belt for this machine.;) It is a newer 66 with the motor.

leonf, was that a test? ;)

Janey, that was one thing, in my limited knowledge of vsm, that I did know! :)

leonf 02-03-2020 11:04 AM

ugh.. I think I'll go crawl back under a rock. Sorry.

Bags 02-03-2020 11:10 AM

leonf don't you dare, apologize or crawl under a rock! We need you! I had to tease you just a wee bit!

This is my Union Special designed to sew up the tops of feed or grain bags. It is in time out since it doesn't want to play.
I prollly should have thrown it into a few gallons of oil.

I had to make a belt for the Pfaff when I ran it off an air powered steam engine. Why not?

Bags 02-03-2020 02:15 PM

leonf, I hope you caught what I was trying to say by "no reason to apologize or hide under a rock". That comma in there made it read differently.

Wow, I'm excited to see how that Union Special behaves after having a time out. Cool machine.

The air powered steam engine Pfaff, who knew? That's cool too.

Update

So, it's been awhile since I've participated here, but wanted to show off the work Ziggy has done on the 66 and the combo table.

He only started cleaning the 66 so he could start refinishing the table and I had started on the 15-91 (still work in progress).

Let's just say he has caught the bug. He is now the proud owner of a 127, Sphinx and looking for a Rocketeer and a # 42 cabinet https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

Anyhoo, here's a sample of how lovely she has turned out. A couple of before and after photos. Because there was a large, deep burn mark and veneer peeling beyond repair, he replaced it with some of the black walnut we cut down around the house this past year.

Ziggy is also learning how to sew. Had never done it before. So for his first project - straps/ties for face masks.

1st photo - his first time sitting at a sewing machine.
2nd - I had to try out the 66 too https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png so next batch of masks.
3rd - he's trying out the binder attachment, this is his 2nd time at a sewing machine.
4th - later that same day - straps/ties for more than 32 masks.

I hope everyone is doing as well as they can be right now!

QuiltMom2 05-14-2020 04:27 AM

I burst out laughing when I saw all those ties! Amazing and beautiful job on the 66 rescue. My Mom had a Singer 301 in a cabinet like that,

That's why I had to include that photo. Everything is completely under control https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png . Thank you QuiltMom2, I think Ziggy did a wonderful job on it too and what a treat to sew on and with it. I love these combo tables and I also have my eyes open for a black 301. Never thought about the two of them together!
