My Singer model 27
 

I took the 27 out of the garage today to clean. The paint was chipping off before I got it, but I see the it's really losing the paint. I'm not so worried about decal replacement as I am what type of paint to use. It looks like the body is aluminum? Has anyone ever repainted an older machine and if so what we're the steps you took from the beginning to end?

Google is your friend here. Many people have re painted machines and blogged about it. Here's one blog where she's painted a few machines. You'll have to go back and search through her posts but she's really thorough in explaining what she does. Your machine is cast iron, not aluminum.

I was at the Old Sewing Machine Guy's shop a couple of weeks ago. (I'm in Dallas, but they probably do it everywhere.) They will take the guts out of a machine and send it out to have it repainted. Then they put the guts back in. I mention that as an option for you.

I have been googling and youtubing this evening. Lots of different ways of stripping and painting and interesting color choices too. I have most of the parts I feel comfortable with taking off off. I put them in baggies and labeled them. :D I'm ok with not reapplying the decals. I think the face plate and the one in the back along with the stainless part on the hand wheel are pretty enough. It's an interesting machine. That little bobbin thingy that isn't a bobbin thing kinda threw me for a loop so I'm going to research that too.
I asked my husband if he thought it was aluminum so he put a magnet on it. You are right, cast iron. :D

I wonder if he can put it in his electrolysis to remove all the gunk and paint? hmmm, idea!

If you machine is truly a 27 ( it has the high bobbin winder but the manual tension release so it can be) then it is most likely already had one repaint, most likely when it was converted to electric. Though it also looks like it may have originally had the low bobbin winder and the holder was ground off (looks like it's not quite smooth in that spot) and that was changes along with the guard and flywheel.

The 27 did not originally come electric or with this decal pattern, though the 127 did. I'd lean towards it's a repaint, and that is why the paint is coming off like it is.

Have you had a chance too look up the serial number? It would be interesting to know it's age ;- )
