As a thank you gift to my neighbors who gave me my two new Featherweight girls (no names yet), I've decided to stick with something simple since I'm a new quilter. I'm using the Yellow Brick Road pattern and using Hoffman Bali Pops in Brown Sugar. I have it almost pieced together and thought I would attempt to do FMQ myself on my 201.

My question is - what color thread should I use for the quilting? I was thinking a light beige...off-white just seems like it would stand out too much and I'd like the quilting to match with the fabric.

If you have the almost Spring 2013 Keepsake Quilting catalog, the fabric is on page 20 (Sugar and Spice Kit) and on page 21, top right of the page.

Thanks for you suggestions.

Julie

When making a decision on quilting thread color, I was shown that if you spill some thread onto your fabric from the spool you can get an idea of how the thread will look with the fabric. Just unwind a couple of feet and let it naturally fall in an area of 5 to 6 inches square.

I was just looking at the Brown Sugar Bali Pop last night - very nice blues and browns - I would probably go for a tan thread for quilting if I wanted it to blend in. Lucky You and what nice neighbors!

So I finished the thank you gift to my friends for the beautiful two gorgeous Featherweight 221 sewing machines they gave to me. I made them a lap quilt to match the colors in their Airstream travel trailer...It goes so well with the leather couch. Then I also knitted her a shawl to wear when they are outside camping. It's very soft and warm. She loved both and he was very happy and grateful for the gifts as well. I would value both Featherweights to be at least $250 - $300 each so this is the least I could do to say thanks. Here are a couple pics.

Wow! What a sweet neighbor, and beautiful machines! I do hope you take a few moments to sew a bit on each of them! :)

You are so lucky to have such a good neighbor.

Hi again....I got out my two new FWs and serviced them. Didn't need to clean them because there already pristine. Even the wiring underneath on both machines is like new! I replaced the needles, oiled and lubed them. Both machines have the MOST beautiful and even stitches....no tension problems....I still can't believe it! I'm going to be setting up my new sewing room this coming week and can't wait to set them out on display. When my grandchildren are old enough to take on the skill to sew these machines will become theirs, but until then...I am keeping them safe and warm in my sewing room:D...LOL.

Wow! How blessed you are! And such a neighbor!!! I was just thinking of my grandgirls --how I would love to give them such a gift!!
I just last week received a Singer 401a I bid on Ebay (kind of scary for a new adventure for me) looked pretty good in pictures..opened her top and thought I might have made a big Booboo...spent about 15 hours cleaning her so she stitches now (she would not Zig Zag). .still may need more cleaning. She needs a ZZ cover plate before I can really see if she will work..I think when I get her all cleaned up she will be a great machine!
So happy for you!

My 401a was a Craigslist find. It was really rough when I got it and wouldn't so faster than a snail's pace, but oiled her up and she purrs like a kitten. So that's what I call her ' Kitten'. May keep her, not sure yet.
