I got this machine free and it zig zags great but can't get it to straight stitch. Anyone know how. The button that you turn on the front moves but the machine only zigs and zags.
Thanks...tried to post this in vintage machines but couldn't find it on the list with the posts.

It might be some sticky linkage keeping it from disengaging. I would take the top off of the machine and look around and see if you can oil it up real good and that should fix it for you. I have a full set of cams for this machine if you need them.

This machine is a model 48 and it was made from 1959 to 1962.

I did oil it and everything seems to be moving great. Of course I don't know what to really look for...but it runs wonderful and sounds great. Do the cams go on the little compartment on top? I wondered what that was for. Do you have any diagrams or such for this machine?
I would be happy to send you my e mail if you can direct me further.
Thanks
Susan

My kenmore has the knob but it also has a sliding guage that you set for straight stitching. Mine is a different model but my older singer is the same way. Check to see if you have another adjustment to make

Thank you and I will try to look for that.

Did you get your Kenmore 158-480 to straight stitch? I have recently retired and have returned to my mom's machine. Haven't used it in 30 years and I have two boxes of attachments, the buttonhole attachment and the cams but idea how to use them. I am hoping that since your original post, you could share where to look for knowledge. Thanks
