Need help with parts for Singer Featherweight (Joe Miller)
 

Hi Joe,

I am hoping that you can help me - I have a Singer FW from 1946 that works but the electrical cord is not very good & I am concerned about the safety. I would like to replace the whole thing - from where it plugs into the machine, right down to the foot & to the electrical outlet. The foot is fine but I thought I might as well replace the whole thing. Where can I get this part? I did have the address for a company that dealt with vintage parts but I have lost it - I am hoping that you can help me. Serial # is AG875281
Also, can you give me some advice on getting rid of the musty smell from the case? I have tried everything that I can think of but it still hasn't helped. I will be forever grateful.

Besides the April1930s, you can get cord sets for the Featherweight at Sew-Classic.

As for the case, my wife and I tried a bunch of things. What seemed to work the best was a bag of ceder wood shavings. It seems to have reduced much of the odor. However it still has the musty odor if left closed for a long time.

I've read that it's the glue they used that makes the smell.

There is another thread here about getting a mew or original FW case, lots of suggestions in there too.

Thank you Joe & Pat M - it was Sew Classic that I had dealt with before. I am going to try either place if I can't get someone to re-do the wiring.
As for the smell, I did not even think about cedar shavings but I will give it a try. Someone else had also suggested to leave it out in the sun as apparently the sun will help to get rid of the smell, after filling it with newspaper. I did try the newspaper thing but did not put it in the sun. I had left it out in our shed in the back yard thinking that being out in the fresh air but protected from the elements would help but it has not. Leaving it in the sun is certainly worth a shot. Thanks again for your experienced input.

Sorry!! Will try again. Visit www.featherweight221.com. I purchased the book and dvd's and used them to restore my featherweight. Check out David's blog. His book tells you how to remove the smell in your case using a light bulb, etc. well worth the money. He also sells machine parts. I had a problem with the finish on my machine, contacted him at his website and he called me personally.

The thing that has worked the best for me to remove the smell from old cases is to put several used dryer sheets in, close the lid for about 1 week and usually the smell is mostly gone. I have had to let one case go for an additional week, but always have good luck with that. For parts for Featherweights, try my website: www.thequiltgal.com.

One of my cases smelled really bad. I tried dryer sheets, a bar of Irish Spring soap, newspaper and an open box of baking soda to no avail. Finally, I put a pint jar about half full of freshly ground coffee and just left it in there for a week or so. At last--no stinky case.
