Need help with Viking Husqvarna 960
 

I purchased a used Viking 960 a few months ago and it came with the instructions manual, but I am having a problem I don't know what to do about. I have noticed that whenever I sew very fast, the tension thread on the bobbin knots up. I think I have threaded it correctly on top and bottom (bobbin), and have even re-wound the bobbin thread. The machine sews beautifully as long as I amble along at a leisurely pace, but when I speed up I run into problems. I have adjusted both tension settings and that is all I know to do. Anyone out there have any suggestions for this machine? I was loving it but am getting very discouraged, and this, along with my being new to quilting is about to bring me to a screeching halt. BTW, I ran into the problem when I was joining a regular piece of cotton calico cloth, probably 200 TC (not thick at all). Thanks in advance for any help from anyone.

Have you fully cleaned and oiled the machine? This series can benefit from a dab of lubrication right on the peg in the center of the bobbin assembly. If this doesn't help, there may be some wearing on the inner bobbin assembly. They're made from plastic and the poly threads made marks or grooves on some of them that can catch the bobbin thread and create problems.

I have used the brush to clean it out, didnt find much debris or didnt know where to look. I didn't oil it because the manual says it doesn't ever need oiling, so should I do it anyway? I'll look carefully in the bobbin housing with a light and see if I can see anything that looks out of place. Thanks.

All the older Vikings need lubrication. Do what I suggested and see if that helps.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll keep trying, but may end up taking it to the shop in Columbus, Ga. I have another older model Husqvarna that needs to be looked at, so I'll probably take both of them. Its not too far away and its always nice to visit another LQS, especially since the one here in Montgomery recently closed.

I know this may sound crazy, but when all else fails, put in a new needle. I have been amazed at what a new needle can "fix." Good luck :)

Hi, I was trying to help someone out and bought their Viking Husqvarna 960. I need help with the manual too.

I've got a 990, It's been my main machine for over 30 years and still going strong. I use to be a professional seamstress- so this machine has lots and lots of miles on it.

I've got the manual and assorted stuff that came with it. This one came with a three ring binder as a manual, so probably not the easiest thing to find.

Not sure if this will help, but....what kind of thread are you using in the bobbin? It may be the issue.
