Nelco

Does any one on here know anything on a Nelco Model R350 serial 077589 sewing machine I just bought it at a used clothing and furniture store and I have never heard anything on it. If so please tell me how old it may be and are they good machines. It weights a ton seems like it. Thanks any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Weenween. Aka Arlene.

Nelco has an interesting history. As I understand, the company began by a salesman who marketed the machines as a marriage of Necchi and Elna machines. I believe Necchi then sued as the Nelco machines (made in Japan) had absolutely no connection to Necchi. Or something like that.

Anyway, I almost bought a Nelco Lyra last year. I always wondered why the machine had an Italian-sounding name and I suppose it was intentional.

There is some information on the net about them. I don't personally have one so cannot be of any more help but I think KenmoreRulesAll is on the right track with his info.

I have an old one, it is pretty, but, I need a tensioner or a stud. I haven't sewn on it, so I can't tell you any more info.

Nice story. I don't know anything about the first part, but the story is sadly lacking truth from the point after he contracted to have his own label built. There are public records and enough memories from OSMGs who remember the hubbub surrounding Jolson. He was caught one too many times trying to pass off his Nelco machines for Necchis. Necchi sued him and took the distributor rights from him, he didn't withdraw. You'll still find Nelco machines today with a Necchi sticker on them. I've deflated more than one persons' balloon by telling them that sticker does not make a Nelco machine a Necchi.
