New Girl At My House

Here is my latest Goodwill find. I was interested in her mainly for the wood treadle base which I had never seen before. She was born in July 1941. She is missing a few parts on the treadle mechanism but I have a doner treadle base to rob for parts. The cabinet has seen a lot of use but I have seen and have worse. I ended up paying a little over $30 after some serious last second bidding. :D

Dear Carolina,

Thanks for the pics. I too have been bitten by the vintage bug and love that cabinet. It should refinish very nicely. What model Singer is that?

My Goodwill doesn't carry fabrics or machines. Love your new find. Very different base- don't think I've seen a stand like this before.

pinkberrykay 03-09-2012 06:07 AM

The stand is very unique, congrats on your new family member!

NICE 15, and I love that cabinet! :) Congrats!

Looks like it will turn out to be a nice machine all the way around when you're done with it.

Beautiful! I have that exact same cabinet with a 15-96 with RAF decals. I wish I only paid $30 though you lucky duck!

According to the ISMACS site, she is a model 15 born on 17 July 1941. I sure would like to find more information on the unusual cabinet.

That is a straight leg treadle base, which bases began to be manufactured in late 30's through the 1950's and even into early 60's. The metal for the legs changed over time, but the design remained basically the same.

Very nice!

REally nice!!!!

Saw one like that at an auction and thought someone had added a different base to it, so didn't stick around to bid. Aw I should have. Nice find.

She's a beauty. Good luck with getting her fixed.

barri1 03-10-2012 04:22 AM

Wow.. She is pretty.. She needs a good cleaning, and parts, and then she will be part of the family.. Nobody will see her warts..

That is a beautiful machine and cabinet! You were lucky to find it. It's only a few days older than my husband and he's "still in good running order" up here in Stanwood!

Sewfine 03-10-2012 12:38 PM

What a great find. The Goodwills here does not have stuff like that. Never seen one like that.

Straight leg wooden treadle with a model 15. I'm jealous--it's going to be gorgeous. Is that an "India star" decal on the bed?

Is that what the decal is is called?? I called it a compass. I knew it was a bit different than the bed decals on the other Sphinx's that I have. You can see from the closeup of the decal that this girl needs a lot of cleaning. She comes in the house tonight to start that process.

Thanks for the information.

Bennett 03-11-2012 06:29 AM

Yep...that is an India/Indian star variation. Kind of neat, the points of the star apparently have writing on them, but I'm not sure what it is supposed to say. I've heard they were made for export, but again I'm not sure. I haven't found any specific information online about them, just pictures. Adds something a little different to the machine. :)

Caroline S 03-11-2012 08:03 AM

Thanks Bennet. I will be able to see more when the bed is cleaned. All I can see now is the Singer name in the middle.

callen 03-11-2012 09:26 AM

Lovely machine. Very unique cabinet. Will be beautiful when refinished.

Caroline S 03-11-2012 12:33 PM

I did a little Internet searching and yes, the bed decal is called Indian Star. After a little cleaning (quite a bit really), the writing on the star points appear to be in Indian script or Arabic. It would be interesting to find out what the writing means or if it is just decorative.

jrrotunno 03-11-2012 04:23 PM

Really really nice!
