that would be the thread tension module that is numbered from 0-9. what I mentioned is the pressure foot bar tension knob that can be adjusted by the knob on top of the machine on the left hand side. that is used to adjust the amount of pressure the foot is placing in a variety of fabrics. I have a 401A so it is the machine in question.

Congratulations! I just got one this summer at an estate sale and I adore it. My DH used it on his denim jacket. Hope you got the manual but easy to come by and you will want it nearby. I got the desk cabinet but main thing is to have the attachments and manual. I lube and oil my own 401. Videos on that. Love it to pieces. You can sew just about any type material even leather. I have. Mine has gone through 5 layers of denim. Good Luck!
