Actually, Singer has recommended kerosene to use in oiling spots if machine hasn't been used for a while to clean the parts. Then you will want to use regular machine oil. Just SMO will work, but sometimes take a little longer to work out the old oil.

sewing machine oil will be fine for the hinges.. Some cabinets have a wooden stop about 3" high to catch teh back of the machine as you open it.
Can you open the front slide over the shuttle area? if not try a bit of oil there, and let it soak in for a day, try again tomorrow.

Shuttle slide open on a FreeWestinghouse, but yours will be simillar.
