New Toy... Singer 301A

1 Attachment(s)
My fiance had a coworker text and ask if I was interested in a couple of sewing machines he had. One was a Singer 301A in a case with the buttonhole attachment as well as the machine accessories. He said it worked when it was last used but needed TLC. Best part.... it's ! I don't know much about the 301A except it's a straight stitch machine and has a fold up extension like the Featherweight. Anyone want to share their experiences with using the 301A? I read that the black ones are more desirable than the two-toned ones. Why is this? Can't wait to play with my new toy!

Congrats on your new-to-you 301A! These are great machines. I have a two-tone one, and it sews a mean straight stitch!

Congrats on your new toy! I've been looking for one I'm willing to pay the price for a long time. Wish one would fall into my lap like that, lol. Clean her up; oil her up and enjoy!

301's are great machines, and known as the Featherweights big brother, but they're much faster than the Featherweights.

I have one in a cabinet with stool...two tone. Bc of cabinet I don’t use
It very often. When I do I am happy with it. Need to make myself a
new list of machines and accessories since I have many extra parts.

Very nice machine, keep it i bought a Singer 500A It's called Rocketeer very good machine. I gave $25.00 for it at a thrift store down the road from my house. It does sew and I bought cams for it. I use it for display in my sewing room. Plus i can sew on it. These old machines are great even if you have to have them worked on to get them running again. You got a nice machine. O yah, you go on line you can probley find a manual for it. I found one for mine.

I have one that is tan, in a suitcase and came with a folding table to match. I just love to sew on it. I have all the feet and a buttonholer. Keep it oiled and clean and it will last another 50+ years.

Pat -- Could you post a list of all the feet numbers?

http://singer301.com/accessories/default.html has a good list of accessories and a neat site to explore.

Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

Love my 301's

I have all 5, BLK shortbed, BLK longbed, Mocha shortbed, Mocha longbed and Crean/tan shortbed. I have one in a cabnit and 4 in the trapazoid cases. Heavy duty , fast straight stitch machines. Sew through some leather and jeans with ease. Did you know that there are 2 different sizes of the trapazoid cases??

I have two - one set up for FMQ and one for piecing. It's an easy machine to service yourself. Do you have the manual?

Irishrose2 - Yes, it came with the original manual but it is a bit tattered and fragile. I've downloaded a PDF of the manual and will print it out to keep with the machine so the original doesn't get worse damage. Although the machine is beautiful, the case is very damaged and I've been researching (with little luck) how to repair it.

ppquilter - Wow, you've got an arsenal of 301's. :) I would love to have a nice cabinet as well as the trapezoid case.

They are terrific machines.

I bought my 301A in 1956 so that I could make maternity clothes. It is a wonderful machine and I sewed clothes for me and my eight children over the years. The buttonholer is superb. I don't make many buttonholes now, but when I want one, I prefer to go to that machine and use that one. We had a cabinet made to house the 301A that looks like a desk and that was a wonderful idea. It's still my desk and the machine is stored in a double high drawer with no side on it so the machine can be tucked in. The man who made this was an artist.
301A machines are much sought after. They are real work horses.

What's neat about the 301, is they are popular enough that sellers still have feet for sale for it, as well as some original parts from time to time! I ended up getting a walking foot, LED replacement light (it's so nice!!) and a free motion foot (which I haven't figured out yet) for my longbed tan-and-cream 301 from https://www.sewingpartsonline.com/si...ine-parts.aspx . I can't imagine why the black would be preferable...just aesthetics?
