Can't get the slide plates open --put tri flow oil on it, also on the needle holder trying to get that out. Will need a new belt. This machine is listed on google as being from the late 1880's early 1890. Only difference is the one pictured there only has two drawers on the right side and a flat table. My SIL brought it to me last night. It moves freely & needle goes up & down.

Beautiful machine, wood, and metalwork---classic Davis. Netzow was well known for their pianos and like so many other shops at that time sold sewing machines as well. I've never seen a tension release lever in the shape of a shield before or any shape other than plain, a very neat feature. Davis started with Underfeeds around 1892 which were badged Advance. Jon |

[ATTACH=CONFIG]449342[/ATTACH][ATTACH=CONFIG]449343[/ATTACH]got the needle out, the tip is broken off --it has a groove down the backside--the shaft is rounded on one side and flat on the back with a groove down it. the shaft is about 7/8 " and I would say the entire needle is 2" in length. I looked thru all the different needles that I have and none are like that or that size. Will check on one of the websites I saved for needles to see if they have any.

I found this post especially helpful! Just purchased an underfeed Davis made in 1914 in it's original treadle from the second owner's estate. She was 80 and it had been her mother's. I've been looking for another sweet treadle for piecing. The head is great but the pitman is noisy. Working on that a bit later but for now, glad the head sews a great stitch at all length settings (as opposed to those that have the stitch length mechanism worn out) and operation is smooth. I hope the needle sellers are still in business.
