No way this is real......

Ladies and Gents, while perusing Craigslist I came upon this listing. Be sure you have taken your heart medication (if needed and any other you might need) and sit down.

[h=2]1950's sewing machine and other items - $1800 (east knoxville)[/h]I have a 1950's antique sewing machine with a black and gold packard table top. It was appraised on antiques roadshow for 180,000.00. I'm asking 1,800.00. Needs tension adjusted but still works great. I also have a afghan for 350.00 and a quilt for 250.00. I have a crafts folder that is for sale and can be viewed on facebook @ penelope delarosa(betty rose). Thank you and God bless. 865-951-9952

Any thoughts...should I run down and buy it?

tessagin 09-26-2013 07:30 PM

I agree! $180,000.00 for a table top??? No way!

quiltingcandy 09-26-2013 07:37 PM

I think I would ask to see the Antique Road Show episode and see what they were actually appraising. It certainly wasn't a sewing machine table from the 1950's unless maybe Norman Rockwell used it for a canvas. Or maybe it was actually hiding someone's gold in the legs. It would be interesting. And how nice of the individual to cut the price to 1percent of the value. Wow!!! Wonder what the machine is, because $1,800 is way too much for any Black Singer I've seen. (And I love my 15-91 and my Featherweights but lets be real.)

My thoughts include the words "compulsive liar" and other stuff I'm too polite to write. He must be totally insane!

I am curious . . . Can someone tell me or show me a picture of what a "Packard" table top is?

mlmack 09-27-2013 04:11 AM

"Antiques Roadshow", "antique", "$180,000", "1950's", and "$1800"?

It has to be a joke. No one is that stupid, unless someone buys it.

hamchips88 09-27-2013 04:25 AM

i watch antiques road show. he / she is full of s.h.i.t

It's a radio.

ETA: Oops, that one is black and white but the black/gold one is pretty much the same. I found one on a flea market site for $38 so they can't be worth $$$.

Yup it does - we have so much fun there - every day!!!!!!

CookyIN 09-27-2013 12:51 PM

Well, I'm just sayin'... Antiques Roadshow did appraise and tape in Knoxville in July. So now I'll have to watch those episodes this winter for sure. I'm wondering if a "Packard" top could be a Parquet top?

Don't know. The guy may be smokin' somethin' or just be plain crazy. But I also know I can't count the number of times I've seen something on AR and said out loud, "Are you kidding me?!!!"

Jeanette Frantz 09-27-2013 12:59 PM

Truly, I'm no expert! But, even I know that unless the table was solid gold, it's not worth $180,000.00. I was once told that the value of an object is measured by what the "buyer" is willing to pay. I've also heard that "There's a sucker born every minute." and other less than gracious sayings!

miriam 09-27-2013 01:27 PM

I am really getting tired of talking about how much a sewing machine is worth.

lynnie 09-27-2013 01:46 PM

this poor old lady had too much wax in her ears, she needs that wax remover they sell on infomercals.

auntpiggylpn 09-27-2013 02:17 PM

Here's a link to the ad; no picture though. Go figure! Probably a scam, trying to collect email addresses

LynnVT 09-27-2013 02:21 PM

Antiques Roadshow only shows a few outstanding items on the show. When they go to a town there are dozens of people lined up who get appraisals that are not filmed. Of course if this were true, it might have made the fabulous few!

manicmike 09-27-2013 03:36 PM

Just in case anyone took the ad as having any truth in it:

"The highest appraised item in Knoxville was valued at $60,000-80,000 at auction."
From the Knox news

The machine isn't an antique, since it is only 60+ years old, and no one would sell anything that was appraised at $180,000, for $1800 on Craigslist.

not unless it's a scam - they aren't selling it - they are offering it - to sell it they have to come up with a ready and willing sucker er buyer with cash - the scam could just be to collect as many emails as they can get.

NopahDesertRat 09-27-2013 06:45 PM

This sounds just like the ad in Denver's CL a few weeks ago. Same price, same description, and no picture.....although no claims to being on AR :D. I posted a link in the What are They Smoking? thread. My response was exactly the same as yours.....incredulous!

mjhaess 09-29-2013 10:54 AM

I would have to have it appraised myself....

redmadder 09-29-2013 12:19 PM

Bless you, huh. My dad said when someone starts talking religion while you are trying to conduct business, grab your wallet with one hand, your belt with the other and run! Course I can't use his exact language in public.

Vintage is not the same as antique. Former is 25 years, latter is 100 years. The machine is *not* antique but it is vintage.
