I found a Bernina Record 830 on Craigslist. It seems to be in good shape, and the dreaded nylon cam thing has been replaced. I am not familiar with Berninas, but I've heard good things about the 830. (Sorry about the weird title, it posted before I could fix it.)

Really good machines, but I didn't like the plastic bits (the bottom cover, the motor cover and a few bits on the inside of the motor cover) which all fell apart when touched. Check the motor brushes: Bernina *30s are the only machines I've seen with completely worn out brushes. I've only seen 5 Berninas but two of them had nothing left. If you let them wear completely and the springs will damage the armature.
I now have a 730 record which is identical to the 830 but cost $50 (old 830s sell for $450 here) and has none of the plastic stuff.

Who did you have to brib(e)?

I have my Mother's 830 Bernina Record that is fantastic. If anyone could wear out a machine, Mother should have worn this one out!! I have other machines, but this is one that I will Not let go of! Still use it as second...when 630E Bernina is set up for something else.

I have 4 of them. Enough said.

I have my mothers 830 record. The cam gear was shot and had to be replaced but it is a super high quality machine.

Wow, nice machine and it looks complete, too. Score!! From everything I've read about the 830 (whatever the vintage), you're going to really enjoy it.

They are really nice machines - very quiet! And the stitches are terrific!

Just saw your post - I will be picking up one in Florida tomorrow. Will be paying $350 and thought that was a good price. Heard wonderful things and my BabyLoc is in the shop every six months.

That's what I paid for mine. I thought it was a good price after comparing it to some others!
