Looks like VS1 to me which is an uncommon machine as they were only made a couple years:

This also means bobbins are uncommon and I believe it uses a slighty uncommon needle (20x1). Do you plan on frequent treadling?

So what I said then.
They use a very common 15x1 needle according to wikipedia

The 1885 might be a patent date the owner found on it.

The 15x1 might work if scooted down. Ismacs needle list show it using a 20x1 (under Singer VS1 high arm):

Unfortunately, I don't have a test subject so I can't say with certainty which needle it takes though I'd bet on the 20x1.

This seems to be right. The VS manual says to state which one you have when ordering parts and needles, which suggests the needles are different. In the ISMACS needle guide, they say that "In place of a 20x1 needle, it is often possible to compensate for the difference in needle length by setting a (shorter) 15x1 needle correspondingly lower in the needle clamp" which was what I think you said above.

I fixed the wikipedia entry for the VS1

Great you were able to fix it.

Pic for Quiltwoman of 20x1 needle (1-3/4") which is roughly 1/4" longer than universal or 15x1 needle. The needle systems are very confusing. You can also try a 15x1 and lower it until the shuttle picks up the thread.

thank you so much! she is home and she is filthy but, believe it or not under all the dirt and grime, she sews. I am going t try and find out more about her...I was able to get the serial number. Now, to search a bit and find out what to clean her with.

If that's the case it would probably be nice to make a small spacer of exactly this length, then use 15x1 needles.
It could be made from the top of an old needle and be wedged above the 15x1.
This would take away the guesswork (which wastes time) and ensure a cheap and plentiful supply of a variety of needles.
I would call it a "needlonger" :p
