I've got one of those! It's a friction drive with the weird flat tension on the front. These were made by White, I think.

MrsBoats,
How come your Kenmore doesn't have a presser foot or a bobbin tyre?

Next one of those machines I see that I can afford I'm gonna add it to my Sears collection.

@Joe, because that was the shot fresh from the thrift store. It didn't come with a presser foot, but I found one in my stash that fit-Greist, I think, it's a top clamp, with a really narrow notch. The bobbin tire was just a victim of time. :)

I've done that too. Bring 'em home missing the little pieces and dig them out of my stash. That is a nice machine, at least in my eyes. How does it sew.

Joe, I've been looking off and on for a Kenmore like my mom's from 1949, and this (not quite the one) turned up. I don't think of Flickr as a selling site, but the person posting these pictures mentions a price: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2516771...n/photostream/ Don't get your hopes up as to a purchase, though, because the photo is dated in 2008! The pictures show a lot of the attachments, for anyone interested in seeing what they probably came with.

My mom's looked about the same, but was in a parlor cabinet with the back of the chair designed so that when it was pushed all the way in it would look like a small chest of drawers. It was a straight-stitching workhorse with a knee control and that same brown crinkle finish.

The weird thing about those machines is they are just like the newer ones inside. Near as I could see.
I have a bunch of them I put on the truck to sell at the class I'm going to take - $10 each for people to learn to repair or for parts. They weigh a TON. I think the only thing heavier is a commercial machine.
