OK, rip it apart...

I want to sell my singer 15 clone and get a Singer 301.
I picked this price out of the air

I think the box kills the sale, what to you think?

Give it to me straight, but outside the Wow I Got This For $7.50 mentality please :)

Nice unit, but this belongs in the "what are they smoking thread".

Why not research what people will pay by searching closed auctions on ebay or watching your local CL?

Rodney 04-11-2014 01:45 PM

Honestly $50 to $100 is a fair price for a Singer 15 clone in decent shape to me. Under $50 for a good one is getting into bargain territory. The decorations aren't my cup of tea and I wouldn't pay the additional $ for them.

Thanks guys, I'll go monkey with the price.

Another thing, since the cabinet is not included, take the machine of of it and put it in the case it goes in. I've found that putting anything in the pics that doesn't go with the article for sale just confuses the issue.

Nice blue machine, but the sequins ( or what ever they are ) are a deal breaker for me. The price is ..... way out of reason.

For here it would be overpriced but I live in a lower end market. It's a very sharp machine and certainly should sell for more than $7.50. I think it's unlikely you will get a 301's worth out of it. They sell for more dollars then 15 clones.

The customizing will deter some but I bet you end up selling it because of it. :D I like it.

I'm with Anastasia and like it too. Someone (or their children) have spiffed it up nicely. In Australia you wouldn't get anywhere near $150 for it (you might get close if it were an actual Singer 15 with decals) but someone will definitely want it because it's in great condition.

I love that machine!
so pretty! ive been eying this one close to me http://daytona.craigslist.org/atq/4414363205.html
its $85 with the cabinet your look slike it might be in better shape though ,
Id start it @ 125 see if you get any action on it you never know you might . then lower it or take best offer . cant hurt to try right ?

there is a singer 301 for $95 on craigslist here too . do you have one you are looking at ?

mlmack 04-12-2014 04:48 AM

Around here, you can buy unadorned Singer 15s, usually in a cabinet, for less than $125.

I wouldn't pay more than $50 for a 15 clone, and even less for one that had been Bedazzlered.

Of course, the prices may differ in your area.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the input from everyone.
amcatanzaro, I think something was lost in the translation :)

Good point about the 'not included' table, I'll mess around with everything if it doesn't sell and start fresh next week.

For those of you that can get out and about, the world is your oyster. For people like me, chained at home (89 year old mother w/advanced dementia) the prices you run across machines for are in never never land :) In our dreams perhaps!

thanks again for the input!

Devil's advocate here, but when you get your treasures home, how much time and money go into a machine before you feel it is in top shape? Your time and parts are all worth dollars.
The tuneup on this was $69.00 and the parts brought it up to $120.00.
I'm not trying to recoup that, I've gotten my pleasures worth out of it, but just chatting, I've seen the hours spent and parts ordered for our lovelies all over the forum. You can hardly call something a $10.00 machine if you have to put a lot into it.

I was given a featherweight a few years ago, wasn't I thrilled! She was right, it was a boat anchor ;) I must have spent at least 30 hours working on cosmetics for machine and case alone. Based on that experience, and again, the time I see invested here, the only machines I've purchased since have been in decent shape and working order.

My treadle head and cabinet were free last year and I don't think the machine was ever used. So I guess I do get in on some of the good stuff! Did have to lash out on treadle cord...so it wasn't free in the overall sense of the word :)

If you run across any perfect craigslist ads will you post them here? So I can make a better ad?

I'm always amazed it is free to use the service. Wonder how they recoup all the server space? Any ideas?

I wonder what the rest of their house looks like -- Is it Bedazzled too LOL But she is still a very beautiful lady.

mlmack 04-12-2014 07:41 AM

Your ad looks fine, though you might want to include a picture of the faceplate, since you mentioned how great it looks.

Rodney 04-12-2014 09:05 AM

I'm on Craig's list most days. Do you prefer the Seattle or Portland market for machines?
Rodney

Rodney 04-12-2014 09:18 AM

I think I misunderstood the Craig's list question. Your ad was actually pretty good as written. I'd show a better picture of the box too. It's hard to find boxes of that vintage in good condition. While you may not like the alligator finish on it, it's like the decorations on the machine. Someone will like it.
Also, I'm happy to keep my eyes open for a 301 for you. They do turn up at decent prices occasionally.
I generally put 2 to 3 hours into a machine before it will sew if nothing is really wrong. Mostly it's just a good cleaning and oiling plus the tensions are usually way off.
Unless you just got it out of a shop or saw it sew before you bought it, I would count on that time being spent on any used machine.
Rodney
