Old Necchi Questions?????
 

I got an older Necchi machine in a cabinet from my Husband's Aunt, she says it doesn't work, I haven't tried it out. It is a Necchil Model BU????

Anyone know anything about it??

I have a BU Supernova. Love it. I have all the cams, accessories, manual, notes from the previous owner. [ATTACH=CONFIG]364727[/ATTACH]

Not sure this is a Super Nova, I haven't tried to get it out of the cabinet yet, seems like something is stuck so I don't wanna pull too hard on it. There are alot of accessories with this one too. I contacted a sewing machine shop to see if they could fix it, not exactly sure what is wrong with it either. Thanks for the tips. Is yours a work horse or is it persnickity? TIA, Jeanne

Great machine. The most quiet stitching of any machine I have. The thread tension can be a challenge if not totally clean. Sew with as little tension as needed. Oil it well. They love to consume oil more than the average machine. I hope you have to cams and button hole cam. The machine is belt driven, and you should check it for wear. I believe I used a standard belt for it and it worked fine. Let me know if you need the manual. It is truly a GREAT machine.

That's an old one, but the one I started on and made my first skirt on when I was 10.. was a Necchi..the black one with the knee "arm"... not a foot pedel! You pushed this long arm that hung from below the machine...to the right with your knee! It was black.. and went forward. .. only. NO backwards, no zigzag.. nothing but forward and stop and start! But boy it made my clothes and my sisters before I started sewing and I used it for years until Mom got a Brother in a drawing in Las VEgas...it had zigzag and reverse!!!

I got a machine that was stuck in the cabinet. The screw holding the hinge pin was loose - no access to it either. You could try positioning the machine/cabinet so it is on the end of the pin to ease it down onto the pin better, then pull the machine out. We had to unscrew the top of the cabinet to get to the pin screw. Older Necchi's are nice machines.

Sure is a Cool Looking sewing machine tho :) called a local sewing machine repair guy and he said it probably isn't worth refurbishing it, he said over $100.00 just to get it in running order and I don't think there are any cams with it. I can post some more pics of accessories if anyone thinks they can tell me what they are. I have 2 footplates, lots of different decorative feet, and a bunch of stuff inside a metal jar type thing and a box full of other accessories with it. :) It is SOOO COOL wish I could get it fixed and in working order. :)

As far as cams go, ebay may help. There's a batch of Necchi cams on there for sale right now, though I don't know if they fit the BU. Maybe someone who has one can say.

I don't think that needs cams. I bet it only straight stitches and zigzags. My Necchi is an older model - it looks similar, but is SS only, but it does have reverse. It was my best back up machine FMQ when my 301 had a cord malfunction in the middle of a quilt - better than the 15 clone.

I don't see where any cams would go. It looks it just does zz and ss. Good machine - as far as refurbishing it, you can do it. It won't be all that hard to clean up and refurbish that machine - it will take a bit of time and elbow grease. Does the machine turn at all? Some times they do and some times they don't if you see a lot of rust it will be a lot harder to fix than if you see gummed up oil. Give me gummed oil over rust any day...

The cord is cut, I don't know if it is supposed to be a knee or foot pedal I don't see either one. there is a motor inside the case that has some sort of handle on it, thinking that might be the knee pedal but can't quite figure out how to get it to come down. I will putz with it some more and see what I can figure out. Thanks for the help.

Miriam, I looked at your Singer post, I wish I was that brave but No Hubby to help with electrical, he passed away 2 years ago and I KNOW NOTHING about FIXING ANYTHING, so I think I will need to take "Nellie" to the fix it shop. Hoping to find someone who will take good care of her and explain to me how things work with her. I have an old Singer, and 2 old Kenmores :) but this one has parts I have no idea what they are. :)

JustJeanne, do you want me to take some pictures of the inside of the Necchi cabinet? Are you familiar with machines that have a plug box that both the machine and foot or knee pedal plug into. I think my Necchi is like that. My knee control look a lot like a foot control, but with a long 'handle' coming off it. The handle turns up out of the way or down for use. My machine is pre 1950 and yours is after 1950, but the cabinets and electricals may be very similar. What do you need to see? Just the electrical connections?

There is a great Yahoo group, necchisewingmachineclub, that you can join and find out anything and everything you want to know about these machines. You should definitely check it out.

HELP!!! NONONONO!!! Don't listen to him! I have a Necchi group on Yahoo and the BU Nova is a wonderful machine!!! And you can "fix" it yourself!! Come join our group and we have lots of info on cleaning and fixing them and also manuals you can download free. The vintage Necchis were machined with such close tolerances that they tend to freeze up if not used and kept oiled. If you want to post pics of the stuff that came with it or send them to me off the board, I can help with what they are. The Supernovas are great too, like the one quiltingweb shows above. Hers is a BU SN and the first in a line of SN's. I have a Supernova Ultra, the next one up, that I bought new in 1959 and she's my main machine--beautiful pink/cream! And has all the cams to do dec stitches.

Chances are very good that there is nothing wrong with yours except that it needs cleaning and oiling. It doesn't use cams but there are dec stitches you can do with just the zz function, as shown in the manual. These are wonderful for quilting and good, strong heavy machines. A lot of the fuzzy ebay sellers tout them as "industrial strength" to get big bucks...they are NOT industrial at all, just wonderful domestic machines. I have a BU Nova that I'm getting ready to sell....still need to do some loosening up. Our group is at:

I don't say much about the list and notice that Necchis are not mentioned much in the Vintage Machine forum but they are really wonderful. Most can be treadled and many like to use them for FM quilting, especially the straight stitch/BF models. You are so lucky! That's a gorgeous machine! It looks like it needs a new bobbin tire and most will fit it, just a standard one like on the old Singers. I'm sorry to go off on you but I get really passionate about the viintage Necchi models!!!

Necchi did make some really nice machines. You are right this can be cleaned up and made to work just fine. I love the engineering in the old Necchi machines. I can see some of the same engineering in the nicer old Sears machines, too.

I agree with you Pollytink. I am also passionate about the Necchi machine. I purchased my Necchi new in 1955, blue and grey and it still sews great. In that it is an older machine, it is steel and very heavy to lift the head up out of the cabinet. They don't make quality machines like it anymore.

Oh! What model is it? I haven't seen many blue/grey ones....maybe a new example for our group files!!

I was so excited when I found mine. A man was selling his mother's machine. She used it all the time and had it serviced regularly. I tried REALLY hard not to show my excitement when I saw it. It's my only Necchi and I really love it. A little oil and cleaning and it works wonderfully. I'm a member over at the Yahoo group...mostly lurking...but there is a wealth of information there.

I am getting more and more excited about this machine, 1st off it is really cool looking, reminds me of the older singers, I did join Polly's group and what a wealth of info. on there, so much fun to find someone else who likes these machines. My Husband's Aunt will be SOOO HAPPY when I tell her I got it running. My Husband passed away 2 years ago, his Aunt is 94 and I have 3 Daughters and only 1 of them is interested in sewing, so my goal (Unless I decide I want to keep it myself) is to get this one fixed up for her and give it to her for Christmas :) All my machines are older machines, 2 old kenmores, an older singer, and the only newer one I have is the one I sew on most of the time, a 6 year old Kenmore that I thought I needed to have to quilt because it is has decorative stitching and I like doing embroidery but what I found out since I bought it is I would rather do hand embroidery than machine embroidery. :)

I bought a Viking/Husqvarna #1+ because I wanted to try machine embroidery. My mother-in-law had one similar and she does amazing things...It's really not for me, letting the machine do all the work. Lesson learned.

Been there - vintage for me

I'm not sure of the model number of the Necchi I have but it is pink. It came with a really neat sewing cabinet and I occasionally use it when I want to machine sew at our summer cottage. It does run quiet but tends to race off without me being in control!!! Anyone else know more about this machine?

No, but when I got mine, the knee lever stuck a bit, so it was either stopped, or full speed ahead. I oiled the hinges of the knee lever and now it's very smooth. Mine also has a speed control switch. I can flip it to fast or slow. It's a little toggle switch on the right side of the base plate. You might find information by joining the Necchi group in yahoo groups that was linked earlier in this thread. There is a lot of information there, manuals, etc
