Old needles that fit ..... what?
 

I have some unidentified sewing machine needles that I just spent hours trying to ID. To no avail I might add.

4 are marked SIMANCO and 22.

1 is marked MUVA and 90.

1 has no markings.

9 ( three tubes ) are Boye 21s and so marked.

All of them are round shank needles that are within a mm or so of the same length with the same diameter shank.

So what are the Simanco needles? I went through all the pages of ISMACS needles and could not find them. Not even in the section that lists dimensions.

Since all the needles were so similar I checked the machine needle listings pages. Out of over a 100 pages of machines I only found 11 that the Boye 21s fit.

Here's the list of machines I came up with.

The Boye 21s are very similar to Singer 20x1 needles except for the round shank. None of these needles fit anything I have.
There is no cross between Singer needles and the Boye 21s that I could find.

Joe I have seen Simanco on Singer parts that go with Singer sewing machines

MUVA is a brand name. 90 is the size...European # for size 14. I would think the MUVA would have a system # on the package....

I know that Simanco is short for Singer Manufacturing Co., that was not the question.

I know that MUVA is a brand name and that 90 is the size. It is simply a single needle, no package for any information.

Joe, Boye 21s (at least the ones made after 1925....that's when they changed #s) are flat shank needles. I've been buying them for years for a couple of my National machines. Either yours are in the wrong tubes...unlikely if you've got 3 tubes & they're all alike....or yours were made before 1925 when they changed their #s & a 21 was a round shank prior to 1925. At least some of the machines on your list use a flat shank needle....I know Reversews do.

That could be right about the ages. A QB forum member sent me the needles cos they are so very close to the Singer 20x1s. But they are round shank. And something else I've not seen before, each needle is stamped BOYE with the thread sizes ex; 30-80 on the shank.

The flat shank Boye 21s are the same as the round shank ones I have except for the flat.

I still wonder what they fit.

Joe, I don't know what they would fit either. I just know that the National machines I have....a Reversew from 1937 & a Montgomery Ward from 1949 use a flat shank 21. A year or so ago, there were round shank 21s for sale on ebay & I just figured they were in the wrong case. But, if you've got 3 cases marked 21 & they're round shank, I'm guessing they couldn't ALL be in the wrong cases! If it IS an age thing, it sure would be less confusing if Boye would have given the flat shank ones a completely different #, huh?

Pardon me, I read the question wrong.

Assuming the Boye 21's are in the correct tube, the round shank needles must be for something ancient. Davis' from the early 1870's and very, very old White's used round shank needles, though these are a bit longer than yours. (Boye 20, roughly 48mm overall).
