Older Machine - My Husband Needs Your Help
 

Jim wants to hem some trousers. He cannot seem to get the machine set for an ordinary straight stitch. It is a Sears Kenmore made in about 1972. He says the model number is 148.1219. I tried researching and I do not see that number. Do you know the setting he needs?

If you could post a clear picture of the control knobs on the side of the machine, we could probably be sure of how to do it. But without a pic all I can say is to set the Stitch Width knob to "0". That should be the top one. The bottom knob should be the stitch length.

If that doesn't do it then something might be stuck or your machine might have more than just two controls.

Here we go.

OK, run the top knob all the way to the red dot. That should be "0" width or straight stitch. Then turn the stitch length knob off of the B in the square. That is most likely a setting for button holes. Set it over on one of the numbers, that should give you your straight stitch setting.

Kenmores are great machines but I've found you need to have a manual to get the settings exactly right.

I looked this one up on the Sears site and they didn't list a manual. But Relics does have it listed

Sears doesn't seem to like giving out the 148 (Soryu manufactured) models manuals from the mid 1970s. I have a pair of 148.13110s from 1975 and I had to buy the manual from somewhere online (can't remember).

Mine is a little different, but Joe is right on how to get it to get it to straight stitch. Top knob red dot at white arrow, lower knob 12 at white arrow would be a good stitch length.
