OMG, I've gone crazy. I just bought a FW!

For $341.17 on Shopgoodwill. I was sure someone would outbid me. Well, yippee, lol. I hope they pack it well so it doesn't get crushed on the way from Connecticut to California. From C to shining C, lol.

Tartan 02-27-2021 08:41 PM

I hope she arrives safely! I take mine to workshops and charity sew when we are not in lockdown.

sewbizgirl 02-27-2021 10:37 PM

They are like little tanks, so don’t worry too much about shipping damage!

Congrats and have fun with your new baby.

I bought one several years ago and it was shipped in winter. The OSMG who serviced it and sold it to me said to let it warm up for a few hours after you unpack it and before you run it. Cold weather stiffens up the oil.

What great advice! Not only would the oil thicken, but since it is an all metal machine and the tolerances are so close, the metal in the machine would contract ever so slightly, and it's possible the gears would not all mesh correctly. I never would have considered this. Thanks for posting this advice!

Enjoy your FW!

How exciting! I am in love with my FW's. I have 2 and would not trade either. I can be putting both to work at one time easily. Of course I can also share one with my sister when she comes over for a sew a long. I am so happy for you.

You're going to love it. They make such a nice stitch and you can do all the maintenance yourself. Not to mention that they are so darn cute. Mine goes to all my retreats.

SusieQOH 03-01-2021 06:46 AM

What a treasure!!! You are going to love it. They are so much fun and super easy to maintain. Be sure to show us when you get it!

Cheshirepat 03-01-2021 08:53 AM

You are not doing my self-control *any* good, you know...and besides it almost seems like I *have* to get one now!?!? :D

I am just getting finished with my 'lil 99k -I've got a new bug-eye lamp coming in the mail along with some bobbins...and I'm twitchy for a FW! If I ever see one with a reasonable price tag...sigh.

McCallum, how to care and fix your FW they are great for me a must have. happy for you , happy quilting!

Good for you!

FW's are great!
Check out the Featherweight Shop for anything you might need and lots of instructional videos.
I take mine to classes and sew days and it never lets me down.

Last week I saw a FW at a nearby flea market for $325. The case was beat up but the machine looked good. Decals in great shape. I have one already so I was not interested in getting another.

themadpatter 03-09-2021 10:46 PM

It came today!!!!!!!!! It's so danged cute, everyone who's seen it was charmed. So. Tiny. Eeeek!

The foot to plug to wall wiring is totally crumbling, and I am replacing it now. The wiring inside the machine looks ok, I'll see how it runs. It's a 1950 221-1. It has the bobbin case, and everything looks good, except it is pretty dirty. Lots of fuzz underneath, and dust on top. Not sure if it has every attachment, but it has a box of stuff. It does have the completely adorable original oil can, and the obligatory tube of official Singer lube. It needs one new rubber foot right now, and I will replace all four.

And it came with 7 or 8 packages of Scarlet bias binding.

If you need me I'll be in the garage alternately working on the wiring and squirming in happiness.

grannie cheechee 03-10-2021 03:19 AM

I'm glad it came on one piece, and with oil and lube too. Have fun.

Congratulations

Congratulations on your new acquisition.

What are Featherweights going for these days on average? I understand it's a range, depending on condition. You used to be able to find one with wear on it for $150 or so and the nice ones would sometimes sell as high as $400. (222s were off the charts) I've been out of touch for the last couple of years and wonder if they've gone up or down in price.

Tartan 03-10-2021 05:01 AM

Glad she arrived safely! Are you going to name her scarlet since she came with scarlet binding?

They seem to be available at auction for between $300 and $400 including shipping and all that. I'm still waiting to find on at a garage sale for $20. lol. Same on Craigslist here in Sacramento.

That is a great idea!! Then I can imagine her with a cool candy-apple red paint job, too!!

themadpatter 03-11-2021 02:42 PM

Oh, and I decided to buy a new wiring from the Featherweight shop, but then I got it including the pedal on Amazon instead. I got a tune-up kit for this one and my 301, because they were both on sale on the FW site.
