Project machine

I've got an old Singer with super stuck parts. I've been spraying PB Blaster in it every week but its still stuck. It's supposed to be 90 today and tomorrow so I'm going to set it in the sun to see if maybe the heat will free it up. If this doesn't work is it possible to take the thing apart, clean all the rust off, put it back together and have it work? When I say take a apart I mean the inner rods and such. The machine is a 1910 model and there really doesn't look to be too much involved. Any suggestions.

i have 2 super stuck machines, too. Mizkaki has recommended Kroil oil like you would use oil, careful of the paint and heat. Turn it every direction and turn the hand wheel. On mine the bottom moves freely for reverse and free motion. We are thinking the stuck part is the needle bar. I took apart the pressure bar - it had some kind of bad dried up oil in there. Once cleaned it works fine. I assume the needle bar has the same. I haven't found a local source of Kroil yet. It is on my to do list. I have two machines stuck. Mizkaki says when they are like that it is usually the needle bar.

This one has been stuck since I got it, about 6 months ago. The hand wheel will not turn and the needle bar and tension thingy seems to be free of rust. The insides are another story. I tipped the machine on its face plate(removed) and sprayed PB Blaster into the center cavity. It didn't drain down so theres a clog in the middle. If this doesn't do it I'm going to pour evaporust in and see if that will do anything. After all that, if its still stuck I'm going to start removing rods and such till I get it freed up. I'll take pictures of each step so I know how to put the thing back together.

You are not getting your chemical where it needs to go - the needle bar is stuck in it's shaft.

The evap-o-rust could do more harm than good - don't use it. Wait a couple days until Cathy and I can put up some kind of tutorial. I have two to try to fix. Maybe Joe or someone will have good info, too.

OK, will be waiting

miriam 05-22-2014 02:34 PM

I'm remembering why I haven't got any of it yet... I'm not having any luck finding it locally - here is what I did find:

It may have to be ordered on line. I've been calling car parts places and so far no go.

miriam 05-22-2014 02:45 PM

http://www.kanolabs.com/google/ it might be nice if you need a LOT of it

miriam 05-22-2014 02:56 PM

http://www.kanolabs.com/google/ at the top of the page is a google deal - you really have to want a lot of it but it is a better deal than anything else I could find. I could not find it locally. I'll start something when it gets here. I have two machines to test it on. I hope it doesn't take all of it...

Midway has Kroil too:
{ http://www.midwayusa.com/find?userSearchQuery=Kroil } $14.79 + shipping for the 8 OZ can.

The Kroil site has the best deal I've seen. Have you tried the stuff, Joe?

crocee 05-22-2014 03:04 PM

I have a couple off the wall places to check around here. Miriam, IF I find any at a decent price I'll send you some for helping me out with this.

I have had two really really badly rust jammed machines. One was a Singer 99 the other a Wizard.
The Wizard took a propane torch as a heat source along with oil and light tapping on the top of the needle bar to loosen it up. There is no plastic in that area so that didn't hurt anything. Once freed up I removed the bar, cleaned it and the bore thoroughly and reassembled it. Works fine now.

The Singer 99 had a rusted tight needle bar and the oscillating hook was rusted tight too. Getting the needle bar freed up took lots of penetrating oil, I used Liquid Wrench this time, no plastic in there either, and some gentle tapping.
The hook, well the bobbin case was rusted onto the hook so I ended up breaking it. But with lots of oil and some coercion it freed up.

Rusted shafts in bores are a royal pain to get freed up. Sometimes you just got to get serious with them and quit being nice and cautious.

Nope, I never have tried it. The guys on the shooting forums swear by it though.

I saw one on a Ford guy site about ATM fluid and acetate - scary though.

I ordered 2 cans of it - it should keep - I have plenty of experiments waiting for it...

That would be ATF and ACETONE. A very nice solvent when combined. However there are three caveats to using this combo.
A: The acetone evaporates quickly so you need to keep it in a sealed container.
B: The acetone is very flammable so it must be used away from any source of ignition.
C: The acetone is capable of giving the user a screaming, splitting headache as it's a very nasty solvent. It must be used in a well ventilated area.

I have used this combo on some stuck Nissan parts. Worked pretty good. Much better than spending mucho dinero on a a tiny dinky part.

OK so I had it wrong. It would peel paint of at 100 feet away, too I betcha.

Mizkaki 05-22-2014 07:04 PM

Miriam,

Kroil can be purchased at Kanolabs.com
Last time I ordered I got a 8oz can plus their google special (two spray cans of Aerokroil). When I run low on the liquid in the 8oz can I spray the Aerokroil into a jar and use it that way. I don't use aerosols since they waste a lot of product. To get the special: http://www.kanolabs.com/google/

OK I ordered Kroil. I got a call from the company because I messed up my info... LOL Anyway I told the guy I had looked all over for Kroil locally. He said they do not sell through distributors - they only sell direct from their company. If you see it on line or anywhere else it is someone buying it directly from them and re-selling it. Then I told him I posted about their product on Quilt Board and he said they had a huge amount of sales last night and their stock just went up... not really the stock but he did say there were a lot of sewing related sales come up last night. You all rock!!! He thanked me politely for posting about his product.

Equal parts alcohol and transmission fluid make a super loosen it up combination. I had a stuck machine, with all sorts of PB blaster and tri-flo still stuck. So I broke out the alcohol and ATF and gave it one more try before mixing and walla it came un stuck. I guess the threat did it. Seriously, lab tests have shown the Alcohol & ATF to be very effective.

crocee 05-23-2014 08:01 PM

I would worry about the alcohol getting on the finish. The current finish isn't great but I don't want to destroy what's there.

miriam 05-24-2014 03:07 AM

The two of mine that are stuck are beautiful machines. I'll wait on the Kroil and hope for the best.
