Questions about Dressmaker machine
 

I worked on my sis's dressmaker this weekend. I ordered a tire for the bobbin winder which I think will fix it. I found one @ Joannes but its too small. Now I have another problem. When I loosen the clutch nut on the hand wheel to wind the bobbin, it does not disengage. The needle still goes up & down. Is there a common, fixable cause for this?

Indeed, that video was very clear and helpful and I agree it will solve the problem. While you have the hand wheel off, though, you might want to scrape out old grease and re-grease it. Note that I did not say to oil it. Grease goes on gears; oil goes where metal meets metal.

Aren't you glad it's such an easy fix, Heartgirl? So long as you are using the right size of screwdriver and don't lose the screw, you can't mess up.

Dressmaker has gears? Its not belt driven? What did i miss...

Seems like the handwheel hub to driveshaft connection would be more of a metal meets metal situation than a gear situation.

My thoughts too.

The hand wheel is simply a hub that is a slip fit over a shaft. Over time the old oil turns to varnish and can literally glue the two together. Then the hand wheel will not disengage. You'll need to carefully remove the hand wheel, which might take soaking it with oil or Tri-Flow for a while so it can soften the old stuff. Once the wheel is off clean the inner bore of the wheel and the shaft with a good solvent, keeping it away from the paint, then dry and apply one drop of oil to each flat surface on the main shaft. Reinstall the wheel, stop motion knob and that should do it.
